i noticed a few days ago that when working the steering wheel, especially when trying to park somewhere and really working it left and right, i hear a grind or screaching sound coming from the steering column. there are a number of parts ive found on the column that i suspect it could be. anyone else ever have this problem.

our local shop told us after i bought the truck that it needs a new rubber bushing/seal around the top of the steering pump. its the one on the first little box just before the acctual pump. there is hole in it. could this be it?

any ideas as to where i should lube it up, if that would help it.

thanks,

jimmy

If it is a squealing/ squeaking sound, I'd suspect somethingin side the cab. Check your mounting points and see that they are all tight (it's really not that hard once you get past all the plastic stuff).

The only rubber bushing I can think of around the top of the steering pump is the little rubber flap on the dipstick/ fill cap. Unless he meant the rag joint on the top of the steering shaft under the hood.

Could we be talking about that cheap pot joint that connects to the splines of the steering box and acts like a u-joint at the box? I can't remember too well, I don't have one anymore. Parts truck had borgeson shaft. I would probably have been too cheap to buy one, but I sure like it and would buy one now. :)

I agree, if there is a screech in the cab I would expect the problem be with the column. Could any of the column steel mesh be bent up into contacting the steering column? (I am talking under the dash, above the brake pedal. )

I'm with Moab, look for any shiny metal areas on the rotating portion of the column underneth the dash, as well as something that may be contacting out under the hood, if its a grinding sound, and the Borgenson piece its worth every penny.
