I'm looking for ideas/help with noise in the steering column of my '98 3500 4x2. The noise is when I turn the steering wheel either direction. It's a grating, almost grinding, sound. Not metal to metal, but more like plastic to metal. Sounds like it's coming from the top of the column. The truck only has 53,000 pampered miles on it. I can't see anything in the service manual that looks like a possible culprit.

Guess I need to fix it. My better half is convinced the steering wheel is going to fall off. Would appreciate any wisdom any of you informed members might provide.

Thanks, MikeH

Sounds like the same thing that happened to my truck.

It was making that noise, like you describe, and one day I was turning the steering wheel and something caught and broke.

It was an electrical connection for the Air Bag and Cruise Control. The Dealer knew what it was, and easy fix

Moto Head, Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking this sounds like the clock spring deal that's happening on the newer trucks. I usually steer clear of dealer service but may have to make an exception for this.

Thanks again, MikeH
