2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Steering Column Squeak-01

I have a steering column squeak when the steering wheel is turned to three oclock or nine oclock especially at 20 to 30 mph. it appears to be under the dash on the drivers side of the firewall. has anyone had the problem and isolated it? it doesn't squeak with the turn of the wheel but rather with the front tires bumping along through a turn. mine is a 2001 6 speed. thanks john skalet

with 28 viewings somebody else must have this agravation. let's talk about it even if we don't have the sollution yet. the dealer told me to spray grease the little u joint outside the firewall but that didn't phase it. thanks for your help. john skalet

I just had a warranty replacement of the cheap junky bearing that resides at the lower part of the column of my '01. In fact, they replaced the shaft from wheel to first u-joint. 19,000 on the truck.



I had thought that the noise I heard was the clockspring because it sounded to be right up at the wheel. It both squeaked and sort of rumbled when turning, but didn't do it every day for some weird reason.

Lube the hood latch and hinges.

Next, do a search on dash squeak in the 2nd Gen forum. You will find tons of things that can cause the "slight turn squeak". Mine still does it on slight turns while moving at 35+MPH. I have not yet torn my dash apart.

Drivers Side Dash Squeak

Mine had the very same problem. I cannot tell you exactly how they solved it. I do know that I took it in and pointed out that both front fenders had cracks in the spot welds where they attach to the A pillar area. At the same time I complained about the dash squeak.



When I got it back I was told that they had trimmed some plastic under the dash somewhere. All I know for sure is that the squeak is now gone, and has been for about 20,000 miles.



Take a really close look at your front fenders just forward of the door opening and inboard of the fender itself. Just behind the sound deadening panels that are inserted between the fender and the cab structure. If you see any rust around the spot welds, you have cracks. This might be the source of the squeak and it may not. Either way it is very common on the '01 models.

THANKS ALOT DIESEL GUNNAR, THOSE ARE INTERESTING POINTS, I WILL LOOK UNDER THE DASH ALSO TO SEE WHAT THEY MIGHT HAVE TRIMMED, IT MUST RUB ON THE STEERING COLUMN, IT DOES SOUND LIKE A PLASTIC TO PLASTIC SQUEAK TO ME. JOHN

Just spray the steering shaft with WD-40, soak it pretty good and the squeek will be history!!

Look under the hood near the fire wall and try to find the intermediate steering column that has the rubber coupling collar. Just below that is a welded bracket that is rivited to this collar and the bracket has a plastic ring that rubs on the shaft. Try lubricating that plastic ring. That should take care of it.
