Has anyone had to replace the bearing in the top of the steering column? Dodge does not have a parts breakdown, and the entire steering column is NLA. I guess I would like a bearing part number so we can fix up a column that the bearing is totally failed.

No, but mine is clunky. If you find a part number, post it up. Mine's not bad enough to tear the column apart for. Have you tried to have Motion Industries, or a local bearing shop see if they can match it?

Two numbers I came up with from a 92 parts manual are: 4147363 and 4147364. Both are listed, in manual, as upper brg. packages. This was for a non-tilt column. They may be same for tilt. Manual shows numbers are for 91 thru 93. The numbers are shown for a "D" body (2 wheel) but there is no listing for "W" (4 wheel). Probably the same. It appears as though they were serviced as separate cone and race. Probably why two numbers shown. If your local Dodge dealer can't come up with anything, try crossing the numbers with an NAPA dealer. Also may be able to find cross online. Have you looked at the bearing and race for any numbers imprinted on them?

I'm sure the bearing would be the same for 2wd or 4wd. We never made a different column or steering shaft, it was one fits all.

Is there any way to verify that a tilt/nontilt would be the same? I'll call and see if any are even available and report back.

BSchwarzli: Tried to send a picture from the manual of the breakdown, but for some unknown reason, it won't go. I can send pic to your email if you give it to me. Basically, it is inside the upper collar. Where the horn and turn signal parts used to be. It appears to consist of three parts all contained in the packages I sent earlier.

If you can find a bearing number on the race you should be able to get the bearing almost anywhere. I strongly suspect that it's a common bearing that many manufacturer's make. many use the same secret codes, but cross over lists are available at industrial supply houses or bearing specialty distibutors.

Even if the number is not there, a bearing house can most likely ID it.

Our problem is the manual steering column we want to use, we received with no bearing in it..... alll pieces gone. The auto-tilt column we took out of the truck, we destroyed the bearing trying to get it out, and the outer shell is pressed into a non serviceable part. So at this point and time, we don't have any parts that we can get numbers off of... . I guess I should take some pics.

I put out a couple of inquiries and will see if I get any results. If I do, I will post here. May get call back tomorrow. It may be a trip to the junkyard and pulling one apart to get the bearing ,in order to get a part number off the bearing. Using old bearings not the greatest idea. I know where there is a column, but not sure if the owner will part with it or parts from it. Any chance you can have a shop near you press out the race that is in the tilt column you have. It may have a number on it and could be cross referenced or sized by a bearing house in your area.

Hey, Lil brother, don't even think about giving away my spare column, if that's the one
you were thinking of! I will look at it though, and see if I can determine anything that will help.

Nope, think I found one down here, but don't think he will part with it either. Won't know for a day or two, as he is a driver and is on a run. His dad knows they have one, but doesn't know if he will part with it. I would hope you know me better than that, John.

Jim,

I was just joking with you! I know you wouldn't do that without checking with me first! Anyhow, I will try today to find time to pull the column apart and look for numbers.

John

I partially disassembled the '92 tilt column I have, but the bearing is in the top yoke portion of the tilt assembly, and it appears necessary to disassemble the tilt mechanism
to be able to remove it. I don't have my FSM with me, to check proper procedure, and don't want to risk damaging the column, as I'm going to use it in my other truck. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

There is a special tool to pull the pivot pins, but if you are careful you can screw in the appropriate size machine screw and pull them out. There is also a special tool to remove the lock plate. It threads onto the shaft then the plate is pushed away from the wire circlip that fits into the groove cut in the shaft.

All the tools are available over the counter... ..... they are the same for Chevy.

The standard colum upper bearing replacement also takes some special tools to remove and also to reinstall bu can be worked around using some ingenuity.
