Steering Column

My 2001 has an issue that I never expected. I went to leave yesterday and when I shifted the truck into drive nothing happened. The lever moves up and down and nothing happens. I'm assuming that the shift tube inside the column has broken. My truck has 195K miles on it but is in immaculate condition. Has anyone experienced this before? I can fix it but I'm befuddled as to why it broke.

Yes I had this problem on my 98 , my mechanic welded it for me. It;s not the best but works.
