Steering Gear Leak....

Bush mention in another posting of mine that I don't ask for help often.....



This week I seem to be cursed!



I know this has been discussed in the past but I haven't taken the time to utilize the "search" function.



This morning I noticed 'oil' splattered all down the driver's side of my truck. Further investigation shows a 'weeping' Steering Gear Assy w/ no loss in Power steering yet.



Isn't there something about a seal on the steering gear that 'blows' or will I be doing a reman Steering Gear this weekend?



TIA for the advice..... Sorry, I can't provided a better discription of the problem.

I had to replace the seal on the steering shaft stub on my truck. Got the seal from the local DC Dealer for about $18. I know that the lower arm shaft can also leak and would assume that you can also get this seal through the dealer. No big deal to do the change. Sorry I don't have the part # at work. I think you can do a search and find Bob's old post. Good luck. BTW, my seal started leaking after I replaced the steering shaft with a Borgeson. Make sure to suppor the factory shaft when removing the roll pin.

Keeno, Good to see ya back around. Jeremy fixed his the right way, and I cheated. Mine was leaking at the input shaft. I tried Lucas PS stop leak. As the PS fluid level went down, I'd refill with the stop leak fluid. After two bottles, it stopped and has held for better than a year now. Just another option for ya.



Now, does anyone make a 'stop leak' for my Getrag?

Darn, I was hoping for something in a bottle, for like $7. :-laf If my wallet was bottomless, I'd go for an NV5600!

I wonder if that curse was transfered though the steering stabilizer... I just replaced my pump for the 5th time since buying the truck in 98. I think I'm going with the stop leak. I've lost that seal in the input 3 times. One time I had one give me a large clunking sound as I turned and then there was about a 1/2 turn of play either side of center to move the tires. One rebuild wouldn't turn right. (I now check for this BEFORE installation). Good luck with your operation.

Good to hear from you! Who gave you that darn'ed Steering Stabilizer anyway! Chuck that thing into the Pacific <kidding, of course>!



I plan to get into this Steering Gear this weekend.....

I actually followed a set of instructions from Jeremy (Case500D) and repair my steering gear when I did the Borgeson.



You'll need a couple of fresh drill bits, maybe number 30's or 1/8".

You drill thru the outer part of the existing seal thru some tuff metal inside it, and use a couple of good wood screws or drywall screws threaded into the holes and pry it out.

I may still have Jeremy's instructions on my 'puter, if you want, I'll try to find em for ya. .
