Ever since installing my Borgeson steering shaft I have had a "clunk" that I have always assumed to be in the telescopic joint of the shaft. I can wiggle the shaft back and forth and duplicate the same clunk that I am feeling through the steering wheel. I just loosened the shaft and pulled it away from the box then wiggled the splined shaft-oh ****-here's my clunk. I went ahead and adjusted the bearing preload, but no effect. Called my front end man and told him what is going on and he said that it is excessive lash and can be adjusted out with the over-center adjustment (along with the usual warnings about over tightening). I am going to do it this afternoon. Does this sound right? If it doesn't adjust out, then what?

Heavy Metal, I had the same problem with my 97 ram when I installed a Borgeson shaft. I did not like the clunking so I returned it. I then bought a Flaming River shaft which ed seamed to help a little so I kept it on. I remember reading a post about a plastic bushing or bearing on the lower steering column that causes the clunking. My 02 has the clunking only when the weather is warm. The dealer replaced the steering shaft this summer with no real improvement. I have not had time to resolve this yet, besides it's cold out now and the clunking has gone away. I know in the spring it will return. Good luck,Gregg
