ive devoloped this growl that makes a growling sound that is heard and felt through the steering column. ive checked the fluid and the level is ok. i was going to change the fluid the next chance i have, but im wondering if anyone has encountered this and has any helpful info.

any recommendations on how to go about changing fluid in the steering system, other than pulling the hose on the bottom of the pump and let drain and refill and bleed?

I had a growl and switched to synthetic ps fluid several years ago. It went away after I did that. To change the fluid get something like a turkey baster and suck all the fluid out of the resevior and replace. Drive a bit and do it again. After you do it about 4 times it should be pretty much all replaced. I used valvoline synpower ps fluid and it has worked great for me.

Not to say you dont have other issues with your pump as you might but I would sure try this first.

cool. the baster idea sounds a lot neater than pulling a line and p/s fluid running every where. :) it only growls at about a 1/4 turn from lock either way. if that makes a diff.

i think i have some of that synpower p/s fluid in the garage.

yea i put synpower in mine, made the pump run muchhhh smoother. the synthetic runs a helluva lot better in the extreme cold too. . my dad's 99 pump make some crazy noises below -10 heh i cant get him to switch to synth tho. . i duno, some ppl just stuck in their ways. .
