2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission steering pump

i think the power steering pump in my truck is going out, when i get in it and start it up it is impossible to turn the wheels unless i run the rpms up a bit, once i get moving it is no problem and it will be fine till i shut the truck down.....





i was looking on rock auto for new ones but there are like 3 different ones listed and some come with little tank and some dont ..... what should i get, and should i get the seal kit for the vacuum pump also.









and on a side note any one know if a late model (24v) pump with the spots for hydro boost brakes will bolt up to a vacuum pump from a 92 12v?

I highly recommend the higher volume pump from PSC (model number in the sig). You'll need the seal kit as the pump does not come with a can.

My truck acted exactly like yours but only in cooler weather. I siphoned out as much of the old fluid as I could get,which was milky and brown,and put in new ps fluid. that was two years ago and haven't had the problem since.

If you're trying to save the current pump, before replacing fluid remove the small filter on the high press line. Search for thread on ps pump mods... there's a pic of what to do. If you can't find it let me know and I've got it saved somewhere. To increase pump performance you can lengthen the big spring to 2+ inches and clean the small screen and valve. Reman pumps aren't that expensive and it also is the time to replace the vacuum pump seals.
Then fill with synthetic fluid... bleed the system and other than adding a magnafilter on the return line that's about all you can do to the stock systems.
If the current system is not worth saving then the High volume pump systems are very good products. My uncle has one and it's as smooth and well designed a product that I've ever seen. But if your trying to save money, etc then cleaning and little tweaks to the valve can help pump performance. Hope this helps.

Had same issue with mine until I did this - see link - I've used Valvolene Synthetic Power Steering fluid for the last 85k by the way.
