2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission steering shaft clunk, where to lube?

The truck is only 7 months old, in a desert environment. Only been in rain once. I read here that the two steering shafts rust togeather. Where is this, mine is 2wd and there is a rubber boot about in the middle, where it appears that a smaller shaft slides into a larger one. What about the spring looking thing up toward the firewall? Where does it rust; where do you lube?

My 4wd did the same but was more like a rumble noise that was more noticable inside the cab than out. What I did was with the engine off and hood open I slowly turned the steering wheel back and forth and found the noise to be comming from the steering shaft at the universal joint. I too live in a hot dry climate and could not understand why I had this noise. One shot of wd40 and the noise has not returned in 3 years. good luck

the clunk I experiance happens when you take off from a stop. It comes from within the collum somewhere, not when I am turning the wheel.

Chirs T. stated that there's a TSB out on it. I haven't looked into yet, but need to as I have the same clunk.

$433 for a new intermediate steering shaft and that collar that fits the shaft at the firewall. great p. o. s. design. not covered under any warranty. i tried. my brother owns 135 car dealerships (2nd largest in the u. s. )

I took mine out and drilled and tapped it for a grase zerk. I pumped it full and it hasn't made a sound again.

Sounds like a good bomb bighammer. Just what and where did you put the grease fitting on. ?

i replaced the toe plate at the base of the steering column. just another $50 to hold this p. o. s. dodge together.

If it's the shaft get this one rather than another factory piece...

Mine has been in for 10K started clunking. Slide the boot down and a grease needle will fit up inside . It works till I can get a borg on.
