steering shaft install question

On the stock shaft there is a pin and a roll pin holding the shaft to the coupler. Is the roll pin there to keep the other pin from moving and do you punch from the roll pin side or the other way? Is this possible to do without wrecking the seal in the steering box?

mine had a ornge colored plastic plug in it , pull it out and i drove out the

roll pin by tapping lightly and did not have a leak but you could put a small chunk of wood behind it for support

I would guess that the plastic plug is put in after the roll pin is inserted at the factory to prove that it was done.

Therefore I would hit the pin out in the direction of that plug so you wouldn't have to punch against virgin material. (so to speak)

That would create the least force and help save your seal.

Thanks for the info. I did not realize that I was looking at a plastic plug on one side.
