Thanks to you both, for both of your tips and the link. I will not take any short cuts, especially since I would like to live to see my grand children.
I am in the middle of a clean-up in the national forest, so it may take a while before I will have some pics of the repair.

P. S. I just pulled all of the tape off and had a good look at the steering shaft. It is 3/4" but is reduced for the last 1. 5", just before it enters the joint and then is attached to what must be the male 36 tooth spline. The old steering box has a great deal of play. Will the adjusting nut on the steering box take out most of the play or do I need a new steering box? I will still replace the old rag joint connection.
