I would like to tighten up the steering on my '97. Can the group recommend a quality steering stabilizer. Also, should I go single or dual. Thanks

Tom

I just put on a Skyjacker OEM replacement. It's more than double the size of the original. Cost around $31. Real job to get old tapered bolt out. The only thing that will remove it is a pitman arm puller. I doubt you will need a double stabilizer unless you drive off road and have real big tires. Rancho also makes a good stabilizer.

On my '95 I installed the Skyjacker dual steering stabilizer kit. I did feel that it complimented the Dodge suspension positively. I currently have their dual stabilizer kit on my '01. 5. #ad

On my 96 I replaced the stock one with a monroe steering stabilizer in 1998. Had 2 year warranty and it still works like new today. Most of my driving is on road pulling lotsa weight.

I used a Heckethorn from JC Whitney 34 bucks, works great. Just be careful with any stabilizer that the toe in adjustment coupler on your tie rod is pointed away from the stabilizer. It looks fine when the wheels are pointed straight ahead but in a sharp turn it can damage the stabilizer. Make sure the alignment dude knows this also. That's why I had to replace mine.

Has anyone tried a stabilizer on a 2wd pickup?

I have a bit of steering box slop and haven't gotten around to TSB 19-10-97 to see if that will cure the problem. I had a lot of shake from my previous tires. New shocks softened the shimmy, but a new set of skins stopped it all. After putting 12k on the tires I notice it will lightly shimmy on certain roads.

I know the stabilizer won't replace the TSB, but thought the combination would be the ultimate fix.

Comments?

Cheers;
John

John, I'm sure it would do some good but I don't think the 2WD has the mounting bracket and the tapered hole in the drag link required to install one. I'm sure you could fabricate the mounts but I wonder if it would be worth the trouble.

I have had a Rancho 5000 on my 96 4x4 for over 100,000 miles. Gee, makes me think I better check it! It can't last that long, can it? Seriously, anything mentioned in this thread will be better than OEM. My truck really wanted to dive into the ditch everytime I hit a ridge of snow. The 5K solved that nicely.

Dieselnerd;

I have a bracket on the curb side at the idler arm frame mount and a tapered hole in the link. Appears to be a stabilizer mounting location to me... .

I'm still running 245/75-16 RT/S's on factory wheels. I know some with 2wd are running much larger tires, but never asked if they use stabilizers to quiet the ride. I'm not sure if the added suspension components (read independent front) helps steady the ride versus solid front axle.

What's everyone's thought?

My truck has a shock up in the front end.
I guess you could call it a Steering stabilizer. It's been there forever, but I guess it still works great.
I can't tell that it is there,, so that must mean it is working properly.
(In other words, my truck steers like new).

Well, One day I might replace it,, but only when I need to.

Oh, and talking about replacing stuff when you need to. . The Opposite end of the truck. (This is BOMBER's Story)
