I'm having trouble removing the steering stablizer shock on my 01 2500 RAM. I cannot remove the tapered bolt from the tie rod. I have tried knocking it out and wedging with a fork.

What is the best way to remove?

I broke my damn fork trying this... then my wife said... "why dont ya heat it with a torch"... . 1 min later, it popped out with little effort... man I am lucky, my wife is smarter than I... even on this sorta stuff... :-laf

soak it with penatrating oil like PB. put the nut back on leaving 1/8 inch of space hold something heavy on the tie rod to make it less likely to give and swat the nut with a heavy hammer, if it doesn't work, more penatrating oil, good luck

I tried the penetrating oil, big hammer, and a bigger hammer. After none of those worked I used the "fire wrench" to heat it a bit... . popped right out with one whack. :D

see, I tooooooooooooooooooooold you! (actually, the wife told me first!) :-laf

i tried the fork , the the big hammer, the two forks (actualy drove the shock off of the bolt, was getting really ill by that time), got the air hammer out, popped right off, its tight getting on the bolt , but id try that if one is avalible. good luck

I used a pitman arm puller, too. PEP Boys "rents" them. I only had to put a deposit down which was fully refunded when I returned the tool. Watch out, though. When it lets go, it really lets go! Came off with a bang!

All,

When I replaced my stabilizer shock, I cut the shock loose from the tapered bolt, applied PB, and then used a pipe wrench (24"), rotating the tapered bolt counter-clockwise, until it popped free. Oo. Of course this procedure was done only after beating the bolt with a large, then stepping up to a larger, hammer. :D
