2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Steering

My 01 has 20000 miles on it and I have started to notice my steering has alot of play in it, I can move the steering wheel 1-2" in either direction before wheel movement, I feel like I am oversteering... I checked the steering shaft to the steering box and it has some side to side play. Has anyone else run into this problem? I will be calling the stealer Monday to make appointment.

You might check the bearing preload part of this post, I've had to take mine up twice in 175k miles. With all original front end & steering parts, (except for the upper ball joints) it still steers like new. I'm not sure if the steering box is the same on the y2k's but I think they are pretty close. It's an easy place to start, you can do it in about 15 min. or so. If that ain't it, at least you will know.

At 80,000 miles i am ready to buy the third gear box for my 98 3500 2wd. I think it is under built and is prone to wear at the sector shaft lower bushing, i now have about four inches of play in the wheel and have just ordered a 02 steering box and hope since it cost two hundred more that it has a lower bearing instead of a bushing. I bought the cummins and the dodge came with it so i guess i don't have anything to gripe about because nothing else has gone out and it runs better every month. Richard
