I've ordered my truck and can't wait for it to arrive. In the mean time, I'm exploring how to customize the truck and one of the first things I will do is add side steps. But wait! Which ones? Tubes or running boards? Aluminum, stainless steel, or ?? Westin, Putco, Smittybuilt, or ??

What do you have? What do you like or dislike about them? What would you do different? My color preference is black and for Stainless Steel but I haven't found a product with both features. Does someone make them with a no-drill mount for the new trucks?

Thanks,

-Frank

Frank, I have the Mopar step tubes. Polished aluminum w/ black step pads. They are a no drill install. Takes about 30 mins. $356 delivered.

Wilmore

Hi everyone I'm new here and like the site alot. I just received my first magazine and I'm looking forward to many more. I have Wilmore bars. I like the way they flare out at the box.

Here's a pic

Keep looking I am in the same boat (excuse me truck) as you which manufacturer. I have decided on running boards for the added rocker panel protection. now it is a matter of stainless $1000. 00, or aluminum $450. 00.

I installed the Kodiak retractable steps. I really like them. My truck is tu-tone atlantic blue with a silver lower and when aluminum steps are up, they are hardly noticable.

When I had first bought my truck it had mopar black tube steps. The rocker panels had chips after 8000 miles. I looked around for a good set of running boards and looked at all the mainstream manufacturers and was disappointed by the selection. They all seemed to thin and fimsey for my liking. I weigh 240 lbs and need something that can allow me to jump on the boards and they will remain stiff and not flex.

I ended up with the Tough Country running boards http://www.toughcountry.com/products/products.htm. They are rock solid and run full length from wheel to wheel. I am not sure of the cost. I believe they are approx $650??

If you want chrome or aluminum you will have to look at something like JJ Enterprises running boards. http://www.j-jent.com/runningboards.html They are expensive and a bit tricky to install but look awesome.

I just do not feel that any of the other manufacturers stuff will hold up to the abuse I would put them through.

Just my two cents.

Good luck!!

Howdy All, I got MAAP bars (Mid America Automotive Products) it's an flattened oval, they come in stainless or powdercoated black, bolt on and work very well. As a side note to fully protect (or as much as possible) the rockers you should get some type of mud flap, or clear tape etc. Hope this helps. Brad

i have owens full tire to tire aluminum running boards. love them. no regrets. super strong and non skid surface. they do require drilling. they really keep the side of the truck cleaner and no stone chips.

only down side, you need to jack up the truck to get under it.

check my pics for how they look

I have DeeZee running boards. Also have box boards. Put them on before buying the flatbed. Also have DeeZee rail caps. Went with the boards to help keep mud and slop on the gravel roads down. Not 100% effective, but help considerably.

I also have 14"x16" Peterbilt mud flaps on the front of the cab boards.

RE Boards

I'm looking at these boards from xlboards.net. I spoke with them and they're willing to do a GP at a great price. If we can get 10 that will bring the dually boards down to 812. 81. It is a one piece board no lining up the two pieces.

I went with MAAP black tubes simply because in winter I don't want the snow salt and slush under a set of running boards melting all over my garage floor. I don't know what kind of weather you have down there but up here winter is a mess.

I'd be interested in these boards if that price is for SS for a Dually QC.

i have nerf bars - they look great. they do not protect against aggressive tires throwing rocks and they can get real slippery at times (on the steel and the rubber) -- choose wisely! good luck

I got the tough country boards. Keep the bottom of the truck rock free, are strong enough to jump on and took me 20 minutes to bolt them on. No drilling, no fuss. Would I buy them again? You betcha. Mine are black powder coated.

I have DeeZee chrome plated stainless 3" tube, no drill and fit perfect. They tuck up as high as possible while still leaving room to get your foot on them. I would buy them again.

I think sport owners would do well to go the extra mile and powder coat to match.

When I installed them I hugged them as close to the body as I could. (See pic below) To me the tight look is sweet. I HAVE however seen a guy with a lifted longbed 2500 that used the exact same ones for the 3500. with the added meat of the bigger tires it loooked guuuud.
