We have a 97 12v flatbed at work the drivers are interested in bumping up just a dab. Currently the way the truck is geared, she tops out at a whopping 68mph at around 2800 rpm. I am being asked what can be done to step up enough to be able to run 75mph steady.

Having not done any work with a 12v, what can some of you suggest relativly inexpensive?

The truck is a Furd 650 I think, with a 97 12v with ..... ahem..... a "53" block. We use the truck to haul a max of 10,000 lbs on the bed and never tow. She has around 70,000 miles on her and is bone stock.

Sounds like to me you need to do a gear swap to drop the rpm to about 2000rpm when running 70mph. Just my thoughts!!:D

Your question is really going to depend on how much you are willing to spend. There is no "free" upgrade you can do to obtain that goal. The most expensive would be an O/D unit or like mentioned above a ring and pinion swap. I would imagine that the gears in that truck stock (unless otherwise special ordered new) are something like 4. 88's or even 5. 05 (? I think that's what it is don't quote me on the 5 something). Were it me I would come down to 3. 73's (yes they make em for that rearend) and on top of that add an O/D unit as well. That's if money is not a problem. Probably like around $4k -$4. 5k rough estimate for both.

I really don't think they'd go for a gear swap or an od unit. The truck already has the split axle with 10 fwd gears and 2 rev. . I just thought maybe there was something that would free up a few more rpm's to get a few more mph. I know that after I put the DDUFM drag box on my 24v, it'll pull right up till red instead of falling out after 2800 rpm.

I was just curious how much diff a set of injectors or the 3000 spring kit would do for it. I never tried any BOMBs on my 12v. It wasn't until a few yrs ago I found this dreaded place and got infected with the bug.
