I have a 2003, Quad Cab, 3500, 4x4, long bed. I definitely want to install steps so the wife can climb in a little more gracefully. Up to now I had planned to install 4 Kodiak steps, the ones that tuck up out of sight and lower when a door is opened. I still like the Kodiaks but something happened last week that makes me think maybe I should get something else.

Last week I observed someone flinging their door open. It didn't matter to him that the door banged into the side of the vehicle next to him. The door rebounded back and he flung it open again. He did it 3 times that I saw until his door stayed open. (I was at work at the time and couldn't leave the cash register unattended, otherwise I would have gone out and had some words with the jerk. )

That made me think that since I unfortunately live in a city and very often park next to other vehicles, maybe I should get a step or step bar that would give some protection from other vehicles' doors. The Kodiak steps would not give any such protection. My new truck does have the bodyside molding option that I suppose would offer some protection, but probably not much.

Any ideas?

Didnt get the side molding due to that very reason. Had a local "striper" get a wide (2" maybe) black molding for the lower area (front to back) and then put a 3/4 or 5/8" triangle strip below the door handles. The upper one is about the center of the fuel door in height. Pics are coming of the whole truck but you get the idea, hope? Both go from the front of the truck to the taillite.

Tube step

Hey you need to get some tube steps,I just ordered mine I am getting stainless steel ones from smithy built. I had them on my 01 and they are the best at keeping the ******* doors from messing up your new truck. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 03 HO 4X4 Quad Auto 2500 atlantic blue, vortex sprayin bedliner, smithybuilt ss steps... ..... Glenn,

I think the running boards I got would provide good protection, up to the factory bodyside moulding. Check out my readers rigs album or the following image from the manufacturer's website:

Glen,

I'm making a set of full-length nerf bar/steps for mine. They'll be made out of 1/8" wall 2. 5" square tubing. They'll be out 8" from the seem at the bottom of the rocker panel. Hopefully they'll give some protection as well as being steps.

Good luck,

Blake
