Just a rant

:-laf Reading these posts, how in the heck are you guys doing this to the paint on the 3rd gen trucks (peeling, pulling, scraping, rubbing, ect) and not destroying the paint beyond recognition?!?!? I, (pre-diamond gloss) could not so much as sneeze on my paint without leaving a scratch in the clear coat. Post diamond gloss, it is somewhat better, but still nowhere near the quality of my '98 1500. I think my truck would look better w/ a few fewer badges/letters, but there is no way I would attempt it; it would scratch. #@$%! :D

I used 3M to get my "C"'s off. it took an hour poor side and about 5 rags. Definatley don't recommend the stuff. We use naptha to remove aircraft sealant so if it works on a mil spec sealant then it should definatley work on our trucks.

Here is what I did. I got this information from right here at the TDR so you could probably find this with a search, but here you go anyway:

1) Buy one of these http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=1913&itemType=PRODUCT

2) Put some painters tape on the truck (be sure and use painters tape, it comes right off) right above the badges.

3) Take a PLASTIC scraper to pry the badges off. The tape is to protect the paint while you pry against it.

4) Use the erase in step 1 to take the glue off the truck.

I did this on my truck and took off the door badges including the Big Horn badging and the tailgate badges in about an hour and half total time start to finish. It was so easy it was crazy. The eraser is fabulous for taking off the glue with no effort and no chemicals.

did the debadge last night. used 40lb test and lighter fluid as recommended earlier in this thread (thanx again). badges practically fell off. don't waste your money on any gadgetry for this.

Wow! Some of the posts indicated the use of Acetone.

I think you were lucky to get away with it!

I would'nt get Acetone, Lacquer thinner, MEK or any of those strong solvents within a mile of a good paint job.

You would be surprised what pure old diesel will remove.

How about "Skin So soft"? I've ehard it removes a lot of stuff although I've not tried it.

acetone is NO good for this. i made that mistake on a 70 bronco when i was a teenager. then i tried to repaint. fudged it up pretty good. it eventually became a primer colored truck which didn't look to bad but i missed the original burnt orange stock paint that was in nice condition when i started. all because some dill rod put some stoopid radio station sticker on the paint instead of the bumper. and another dill rod wasn't smart enough to know what acetone would do to the paint. no clear coat in those days.

if you neutralize the acetone before it gets through the clear coat you can get away with it but your clear coat WILL be thinner. not worth the risk.

1) get fishing line

2) get some wd-40

3) spray the badges and try to get it into the little places (remember your trying to get this stuff INTO the rubberize material underneath.

4) take your fishing line and run it under the chrome and use a sawing motion untill you get all the way threw and the badge falls off.

5) remove all bages on truck Using steps 1-4

6) Use NAFTHA and put it on and let it soak then peal off.

7) read below so you dont waste hours and dont have to buy special tools to do this.

Listen up here as i will tell you what i tryed to remove the rubberized material from the body AND DIDNT WORK

Goo Gone = Failed

WD-40 = Failed

Peanut Butter = Failed

Degreaser = Failed

Plastic Scraper = Failed and put a couple 1/4" scratches in my clear coat  .

ACETONE (i forgot i tryed this) = Failed DO NOT USE (will hurt your clearcoat if you rub in to hard)

WHAT DID WORK

----------------------

NAPTHA. My dad says they do sell this at hardware stores. I got it from our family business (machine shop) took a rag and a squirt bottle. I did it one letter at a time. Just squirt it on let it sit for about 2 minutes and you can literally peel it off with your finger tips.

Will Naptha work in removing outer door mouldings?... ... I am thinking of removing those instead... ... Thanks

the best thing is to go to napa or somewhere that carries 3m products, they have wha tthey call a pinstripe removal tool, like a big eraser wheel. it takes off all the glue and anything else, no paint though. quick clean and wont damage your ride
