How to lock and leave the truck running?

Hello! I have a 2006 3500 SRW, WITHOUT the super fancy stereo package from the factory. It's the stock CD am/fm Variety. I want to upgrade and take the truck in for a nicer unit as mine periodically will just not work!!!! If you drive a few miles, turn the truck off then back on it works perfectly. The unit is getting power, just won't turn on!!

I am not going to do the install myself but is there anything I need to tell the install guys with these new 06's and their wiring????? Anything to look out for?

What do you think causes the Stereo to simply not work every 4-5 months or so????

Hello!

Do you plan to go with a nicer factory unit, or aftermarket? Does your truck have the audio controls on the steering wheel, and do you want to retain use of them? Do you plan on replacing speakers too?

I just completed a pretty extensive stereo upgrade, but chose to keep the factory 6CD/Tape/AM/FM/Sirrius receiver. I replaced all speakers with Infinity Perfects component speakers and external crossovers, added a 12" JL sub in a Hotbox enclosure, added a DSP unit for imaging and equalization control, and am powering it with 2 amps. I also gutted the interior, ran all new wiring, and installed FatMat sound deadener as well.

In order to retain use of the steering wheel controls as well as interface with the factory head unit, I had to use a JL Audio Cleansweep. There may be other options as well, but a nice feature of the Cleansweep, is that it gives you an extra set of audio inputs, and can accept almost any signal. It's nice to be able to hook up an external DVD and have it play through the sound system. I can even hook up my cell phone and have surround sound speaker phone conversations, play an Ipod, plug in an electric violin... okay, I'm getting carried away now, but it really is that versatile!

If you're thinking about replacing speakers, the fronts make a MUCH bigger difference than the rear.

I'm no expert by any means, and it took me nearly 4 months off and on to complete, but I'm really happy with the results. I'll be happy to answer any questions if I can... --Eric

Nope, I just have the stock and want to replace it with another deck. Nothing too too fancy. Going to use stock speakers etc. I do not have the controls on the Steering wheel. Oo.

I havent messed with the stereo in my truck yet but from past experience if it wont turn on sometimes I would check power, ground and ignition signal wires to see if they vibrated loose. It could also be a problem inside the unit where you have no access.

As long as you take it to a good shop they should be able to do anything you want. They will also have access to any additional info they need to troubleshoot or get it installed.

I am pretty sure there is a small complication in that there is not an accessory power lead behind the HU. I just ordered my stereo and bluetooth from Crutchfield and their info says my 2007 with the basic stereo (should be the same as your 2006 - you have the new style radio, right?) needs a special wiring harness/adapter for the power. Costs around $60, but Crutchfield is running a special that brings it down to around $30 (it is not included for free like simple harnesses). You might want to think about speakers to go with it though - even just the front 6x9s. I'm getting a Blaupunkt London and Bluetooth adapter for the phone (only $300 bucks for both). What HU are you looking at?
