2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Stereo Static problem (long)

I have 02 QC and this past February the factory stereo / speakers began to emit

intermittant static noise from the passenger rear door speaker. The noise would not change with volume, and was present with either cd, radio, or cassette. Adjusting the joystick also did not change the volume of the noise. In May I had Best Buy install a new cd tuner (Sony) and all new speakerss. Almost immediately the noise returned as before the install, and now it has spread to the front passenger speaker, and the volume of the drivers speakers has gone way down. I do knowthe factory wire harness was reused. My local DC dealer is clueless, and wonder if any of you have had the same problem? Thanks for reading...

Do you have the six speaker infinity system? If so, the stereo runs off of a seperate amplifier than the head unit itself. I am not sure of its location but I do know how it works. If that amplifier is going bad it could be causing that noise. It will eventually spread to all the other speakers then finally quit working all together. The only way to fix it, if it is the problem would be to replace that amp with new one or bypass it by running all new speaker wire and running it off another amp.

James, Thanks for the reply. I do have the six speaker system, and what you suggest makes sense. I will call the parts guy at the local DC dealership and ask him to check

for an external amp. This is the first problem of any kind we have had with the truck, and I'd like to get it fixed.

If They Installed A New Head Unit And Speakers They Most Likely Done Away With The Infinity Amps As They Are Bolted Onto The Front Door Speakers And If An Aftermarket Head Unit Is Used There Is No Need For The Amps As The Newer Head Units Have More Output If This Makes Sense.

yes, to what you said about the head unit making more power, but every head unit that I am aware only has 4 channels: front (left & right) rear (left & right). The reason that the inifinity six speaker system has to run off of the amp is b/c of the extra two speakers. (tweeters on the a&b pillars) Which makes it six channels and can not be powered by the head unit; thus requiring the external amplifier.



I highly doubt that the place that installed the radio ran new speaker wire b/c it is quite a pain and thet probably just tapped in to the original wire. I had the pleasure of installing a new head unit in my truck a few days ago so I have become quite familiar with the stereo. I could be wrong but I would put my money on it being the amp.

Hi guys, and again thank for the replies. I went to the dealer today and the parts and service managers both checked it out and ran my vin for a complete list of OEM equipment. My Ram had the "RAZ" code soundsystem, not the Infinity. I came with 4 speakers and two tweeters. According to DC there is no external amp on my system. They suspect the RF Choke/filer behind the ash tray. Anyway that's my next replacement. I'll let you know what I find when it arrives. Thanks again.
