I am thinking about installing a new head unit on my 2001 infinity system and I am told that the speakers are amplified and I need an adapter box to use my exsisting speakers with the new powered head unit. Anyone herd of this and if so what do I need?

Call Crutchfield

Somebody might know the answer, but I recommend calling Crutchfield. They are good and will sell you the right stuff. Great tech support for installations too. Type their name on Internet for phone number.

Been there done that. Crutchfeild says there's no need for any type of an adapter. Problem is we heard that this "adapter" is needed from a very reliable source and we have heard just the opposite from other people:confused: Just want to make sure:rolleyes:

Blair,

The only thing you need it a turn on lead for the existing amplifiers. Your new head unit should have a remote turn on wire (usually a blue one) and you need to connect that to the turn on wire for the amps, sorry I cannot recall the color.

If you use a aftermarket harness, which I highly recommend, just connect the remote wire from the radio to the power antenna wire to the harness and this should take care of things.

We will not be using an amp so I don't need to turn anything on with a remote output from the head unit which is the blue wire. I just need to know if the stock infinity speakers are powered and if so should I just use the preamp wires to drive them?

Thanks so far for the help but I will need more. :)

amp

Yes they are powered, Yes you do need the amp turn on lead and Yes the inputs to the amps can be speaker level inputs. No, you don't need an adapter. hope this helps

Are you saying I need an amp turn on lead that goes to each speaker to turn on the amp at the speaker or is there on amp for all the speakers mounted somewhere in the truck?

Thanks for the help

amps

There are 2 amps mounted to the factory door speakers. there is a wire in the factory dash harness that serves this purpose. If you are using a adapter harness, it will be labeled. just make sure to hook it up.

That's the answer I was looking for, I guess if I waited to see the harness I would have figured it out but I was just trying to get a handle on it before we started. Thanks very much jvanwaardhuizen.

Jumping On The Band Wagon Late

You factory stereo sends an amplified signal to the amplified Infinity speakers.

I don't know what the rated power output of the factory stereo is but, so long as your new head unit doesn't exceed that by much, I think it should work OK.

Also..... search for my latest post (submitting after this one). I just changed my head unit and am working on my speakers (getting rid if the bad Infinity speakers). It took me a little bit to figure out the wiring scheme on the front speakers and noticed that this was a common question, so I decided to post my findings for the archives.

Hope that helps,

jon
