well i popped a head gasket again awhie ago. sick of waiting for my studs to get here. God bess the postal service. anyhow i have the head off going to the icelandic machine shop for resurfacing and new orings pressed in. scary thought huh. they said they think they know what they are doing, but what am i spose to do, but let them have a go at it.

so the head is off and i want to advance my timing a bit, 23*. i figured now is as good a time as any, but i have never done it. i take off the fan, fan shroud, top pulley, the cover in front of the fuel pump on the radiator side?, there is where the fuel pump nut is? i have the new crush washers, i bought 3 cause i figured i would screw it up. i have printed instructions from here, but the deal is... ... ... . the retarded fan is whoopin my butt and i cant get it off. really anoying.

so help with fan, which cover exactly i am taking off, and what ever else i am missing. oh and i am going to run a bottom tap in the holes. then put a set of head bolts i had in my center console in there, until the studs come in then swap them one for one. is that ok? been waiting 6 weeks now. i want my truck back. TIA

The fan is threaded onto the pully and has a left hand thread. This means you have to hold the pully (generally done with a wrench that slips over the series of small bolts on the front of it) then turn the nut clockwise (as you look at it from the front).

The easiest way to access the timing gear is to remove the front cover, which requires removing the crankshaft pulley as well. Doing this makes it much easier to see what you're doing. You should also stake down your KDP while you're there if you havn't already.

You DON'T need to remove the fan to adjust the timming. pull the oil fill tube for access to the pump nut.

thanks guys, behind the oil fill nut sounds good, and if i cant make it work from there deeper and deeper i go.

why more timing with the head gasket issue?

young and dumb, studs somewhere in the mail, think it may have slipped,

also after getting the head off. i looked to see the pattern on the pistons from the injector spray like the one in Jim's post. mine was the same way alot on the top and not so much in the bowl. which again isnt going get better with more timing. they are milling the head though so that should drop it a tad. dunno i am just winging it here

thanks again
