I know a lot of guys will poo-poo this, but I have been toying with the idea of finding a recked 94 or something and sticking the engine in my truck.

Is this a very difficult job?

I have been asking a lot of questions lately, and that is because I want to start building up my truck, and making it what I want it to be.

I am young, and wow factor is important to me... So I want an engine that can be souped up easier and that can blow more smoke, so I think a newer 12v is the way to go.

They really aren't that much more complicated then our engines anyway...

Have you been seeing some of the HP numbers some of the guys are posting? You could always go to a propane injection system...

how high of nmbrs u shootn for anyway. one example i can think of is oldsmokey at 450 rwhp[no drugs] w/ a 1st gen. impresive:D

Holy crap, that's a big engine.

The thing is, getting a first gen engine up to 450 is really pushing it, and a lot of custom work needs to be done.

With the 94+ engines, 450 is easy... just turn up the pump and put a new camplate and some injectors.

My goal is 450.

Switch to Late Model

I hope this helps, this is what I have encountered:

The biggest hassle will be your wiring, but it's not that bad. The motor mounts will need to be switched (on the motor). You will also need to address the location of the fan, the second gen fans are located a few inches off center from the 1st gens. The throttle cable is of different lengthes (due to different pump linkages). With 450 horse, you'll want to replace the Getrag. With the transmission replacement comes other issues (slave cylinder, transfer case, and your stock driveshafts will probably pretzel. ) There are also a bunch of details that come as surprises!

All in all it's worth the work (see below).

Naaaaaaaaaaaaaa... ... ... ... ... ... ... 347. 7RWHP and still going strong right Mike :D:D:D

and I still have a pump to fiddle with yet...

Hey CB, why don't you just swap your cab onto a 2nd gen truck, then your driveline is taken care of... ... It might be cheaper and you'll end up with a nicer riding truck

Whose to say that a first gen cant make 500rwhp? That would be with a VE and #2 only of course. I dont think the limits of the "old school" Cummins has been met. Making 450hp with a later engine and a P7100 would be much easier though. It has been done so many times that about anyone could write a "shopping list" to make that hp. The best part about that would be knowing what to expect as far as power, driveability, and reliability is concerned. Good luck with your project. :D
