Hello guys – I need information on the starting system for our trucks. As you see in my signature I have a 1996 auto 2wd. The starter has hung twice, that is when I let go of the key the starter continued to stay engaged. Luckily when I turned the key off the starter did disengage. When started again everything would be fine. After reading some threads on the TDR I contacted Diesel Electric Service Co. , Inc. and had them send me the starter solenoid contact kit. When I installed the kit I noticed that one of the old contacts was burned down further then the other thus I assumed this was the cause of the plunger getting stuck in the bore of the coil. This however didn’t answer the question in my mind as to why the plunger would become unstuck when the key is turned off! As per instructions I was very careful at getting the new contacts installed evenly. After the installation every thing was great until about 20 starts later and it did the same thing all over again. Something else I’ve noticed that has also just started which may or may not have anything to do with it…the factory radio/cassette has automatically engaged the cassette deck with no tape in the player (never play tapes). I had to hit the eject button to get it back in radio mode, again there was no tape in the player! The truck has 139,000 miles on it. Is there a low power solenoid that is triggered by the key switch, which then sends power to the starter solenoid? Has anyone had the key switch cause the above? Thanks for any and all help…. Don
