The throttle return at the fuel pump is sticking, causing high idle and low speed cruise control. When the outside temps are cool there is no problem. When the truck sits outside all day with warm temps, the throttle sticks a bit. I can go under the hood and push the return back to its stop. I haven't seen this problem discussed in any forums. Is the spiral return spring getting weak? Does it need a helper? I don't know what to do. The rest of the linkage appears fine.

The return spring is actually two springs wound together. There are two hooks on each end. If one of the hooks has worn or rusted off then only one of the springs is working. There is a safety recall on the throttle linkage. Check to see if it has been done to your truck. If your truck has an automatic trans the kick down spring may be broken or missing.

You should fill out your signature so we know what your truck is when we attempt to answer questions.

Thanks, Joe, I'll lok to see if the springs are OK. as for the rest of the information, this is the first time I've started a forum with this new upgrade the TDR is using. My info used to appear. I also have a '97, 4X4, 3. 54's, Prime-Lok fuel filter relocation kit, 8' Fisher plow, very mild engine boost, and the truck is LOADED. I'll re-fill the signature info. Thanks.

J Shoick:

It is likely the ball stud and links on the end of the "dogleg" rod. The one on the back/firewall side of the pump is likely rusty and binding.

A recall may cover the replacement. . ck. with your dealer. If not order the canz9700 part num from the mopar counter. You will get the pieces necessary to to resolve your problem.

below is a diagram from cummins (215 pump0 but parts should interchange) that will give you a view of what is burried in the abyss! or the attached. .

Good luck

Andy

Andy, thanks for the diagram. I'll check with the dealer about the recall, but I believe they've taken care of that ( I bought the truck new in '97). Where does the kick down spring go? Thanks.

Inboard on the bracket (where it attaches to the pump)l you will notice a square cut out which faces the firewall, the loop end hangs on this. .

I thought I'd put my question here rather than start a new thread for a very similar problem. My idle has gone up about 200 rpm in the last couple of weeks. When I wiggle the dogleg rod I can get the idle to go back down to normal and I can feel something like a notch that the linkage gets caught on. What I'm wondering is in the diagram above can parts #5 and #6 wear out? It feels like the ball studs on the rod have room to move around in those socket connectors, but they get caught up and can't return to the original idle position when I release the accelerator. What do you think? Will that rebuild part number above help my situation? Thanks.

Yes,

I digress . . your very concern was the second to last time I visited Dodge for warranty service (1997). Yr. 2000 for a cracked gear housing (KDP), but thats another story. This particular dealer had no diesel tech and no one wanted to touch it other than to coat the linkage with aerosol spray lube. #5 was rusty and binding. After I changed it, it would return to an accurate idle consistently and used considerable less 40 lb tennis shoe to accelerate!

Why not freshen both up? You may notice that the updated part may not have the hairclip retainer that assists in holding the end link to the ball stud. Pay no attention as long as it snaps on properly. If the ball stud is worn, the CANZ9700 (DC part no) is the most reasonable way to get most everything you need.

Good luck

Andy

Thanks Andy.

My rig has had the recall performed so those ball studs and retainers have been replaced once already, but they feel like the culprits when I wiggle the linkage. Tell me, should you be able to see the cable-end on the cruise control cable sticking out of the plastic retainer on the bell crank lever? That cable-end kinda bumps my old-school Pac Brake switch bracket, but doesn't seem to cause any problem. Thanks.

Clinton:

What does the end link look like? If its a shiny zinc then its the old style like the diagram I posted. . If the recall part then it will be a "brushed" black finish. Yes either are wear items, so that could be your problem.

On the cruise cable, I see lots like that. . it probably doesn't hurt a thing or mean anything is wrong. I have disconnected a few and turned the ends so the cable doesn't hang out so bad. On others when the end is crimped, they don't seem to pull completely down into the recess in the plastic connector. .

I'd focus on worn end links if the throttle is "sticky. " Another thought, those plastic bushings in the bell crank shaft get worn over time. New ones and some dilectric grease will smooth the throttle linkage as well. Those aren't much more exp. at the Mopar counter, many Cummins dist. don't stock them, although they supplied the engine with these parts to DC, when the truck was assy.

Good luck

Andy

My rod ends are the brushed black recall parts even though they show shiny zinc underneath where the paint has peeled. I was able to take a look at the contents of the CANZ9700 kit at my Mopar parts counter. I can get that kit for $21. 95. Is that as good as I can do? Can I get just the rod ends from a Cummins dealer? I really think that new ends (parts #5 and #6 on the diagram above) are all I need, but I'm an amateur... what do I know? I do know high idle and an auto trans are aggravating in any stop-and-go traffic! Thanks again for your help.
