After making several tools, and trying for hours (i hate to admit that) I cannot remove my backup lamp switch which is mounted on the getrag 360. there is no room for a socket to fit completely around, so I cut one, not sure why that did not work, but could not get socket fully on.

I don't want to remove the transmission to replace this switch.

So how is it removed? what tool is used?

Back up light switch

I would swap with you, truck and all. Mine works. It has a few more miles than yours I think. 428k Really needs paint too.

Did you try moving the transmission over on the cross member for more room or taking the rubber part of the mount out to drop it down. Or a last resort, take the crossmember out and let it all hang down a bit. Or last last resort, modify the floor pan with an access panel.

Since I know that the older trucks had such a panel and since I have seen some post on doing that on our trucks, I would do that if I had a problem with the top section of the transmission. Such as your problem or a shifter fork is about the only thing that you could do through an access panel but it also helps if you have to drop the transmission.

If you find that it is impossible to get your old switch out, you could wire up your backup lights to a toggle switch. I did this to two of my previous trucks because I sometimes needed light behind them when transmission was not in reverse. It worked good, but i advise using a lighted switch so you don't forget to turn them off. Backup lights can really confuse the driver of the vehicle behind you. Don't ask how I know.
