Refer to "Clutch quit working completely today" for details. The clutch is working, has been bled off three times and still has two to three times as much free travel at the top as it did have. I have been all over this thing and cannot find any way to adjust or cure it. Any suggestions. (I do not have a service manual, but it is next on my mod list, as of today). Thanks
 
According to service manual (model year 2000) it is non-servicable and non-adjustable. I recall there have been some posts regarding repairs accomplished by TDR members. Perhaps the search feature can find somehing for you.



The model year 2000 parts book shows the clutch linkage—master cylinder, slave cylinder, and the hose connecting them—as a single part.

I don't remember who it was...

that posted they moved the point that the "rod" connected to the brake pedal (Welder required) to get rid of the unwanted free play. Perhaps you could check out some sort of "adjustment" under there.
 
Mine is shot, kaput, dead, thanks to the extreme pressure plate of the Donnelly Sachs clutch in the truck. I've got a new hydraulic assembly ordered, it should be here soon. The other guys are correct, it is "non-adjustable" and "non-user-serviceable", must be replaced as a complete unit.

It's time to install a decent clutch in the truck, either a South Bend, or Mitchell.

A common problem with the hydraulic system is the master cylinder seal blows,With the passenger cab real quiet gently push on the clutch pedal by hand listen for the slight hiss of hydraulic fluid blowing passed the mastercylinder seal ,it leaks internally so fluid returns to the reservoir. You can also watch your fluid level in the reservoir,have someone push on the pedal,if the level dosn't drop it confirms the previous check. If this is the case the whole system needs replacing it comes as a complete system,master cyl. lines and slave. If I'm not mistaken its already got fluid in it,already bled. Merv
 
Briar's pressure plate has 3600 lb. clamp load. It feels much lighter at the pedal (almost stock) vs. the 3800 lb I am now using. I have used 3400-3800 lb for years now on the original hydraulics, as have many others I know about. I have also heard of a number of failures with stock pressure plates.



In addition to the hydraulics, check that the diaphragm spring on the pressure plate is not distorted or weakened, and that the pivot ball on the passenger side is not worn out. Also check the clutch fork for wear. Being non-adjustable, the hydraulics need all the other parts to be in excellent condition too.
 
Mine is fixed.

I guess I finally got all the air bled out. It feels just like dad's now. By the way, you do not have to replace the whole unit. Napa had a slave cylinder in stock for my pickup (it was for a 98, but was exactly like mine). Once again, DC can kiss my a$$.
 
You can get the slave cylinder by itself, however you cannot buy a master cylinder by itself - believe me I looked and looked. My master cylinder went out on my '98 and I ended up having to buy the entire assy.
 
Mine is making the hissing sound and wont disengage the clutch in 1st and reverse without slamming the shifter. What is the price of the slave cylinder assembly?
 
I got the entire assembly for about $180 with the GLTDR discount at our supporting dealership. That was everything from the reservoir down to the slave. Regular retail would be about $230 on the entire assembly. Don't make the same mistake I did and just assume it's the slave. I bought the slave cylinder, replaced it and it still wasn't fixed. Then I pulled the safety switch on the master cylinder back (inside the cab) and found the foam pad in there wet. I then had to buy the entire assembly because noone sells the master cylinder seperate for the 98+ trucks (at least they didn't 6 months ago - may have changed).
