No, thermistor failures are VERY rare. I would suspect you have a wacky TCM, or that one of the TCM inputs is wacky.
Key points:
1. If the trans is simply doing exactly what the TCM commands it to do (as seen by Target Gear and TCC State on the scan tool), then the problem is NOT the trans.
2. If the TCM is not commanding the trans to shift (when it should), then they should look at the TCM data (throttle position, sump temp, ERS gear, etc.) to figure out WHY it's not commanding a shift.
