Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Super Chip No More Run

So I lost 5th gear again after I put in the new SBC DD. So I ended up haveing to put everything on new that goes on the back of the case under that cover. Gears, bearings, synchro and all. Except for the nut, I reused that... Not:-laf

Anyways, got it all back together and went to back it off the hoist. No reverse. Goes in 1,2,3,4 but no 5th or reverse. Cant even get it into reverse, engine running or not. 5th goes in way to easy and nothing happens. So what now? Is something on the shift rail broke too or did I screw something up installing? I dont think that I did. I checked it all and had a buddy look at it too. Thats the only thing that I can think of is something under the top cover of the trans.

Any help here?:{

The shift fork for 5th/reverse connects to another fork on the inside of the case that goes up to the top. My guess would be that when you took everything apart on the back side of the case you disconnected that on the inside. I'm afraid to say that I think you'll have to take the top off the trans in order to get it hooked back up. I can't think of any other way that you could do it.

Not that I can think of but it's been a while since I've been inside one. The problem I think is that you couldn't get the shift fork over the shift drum, get the shift drum onto the shaft, and have it engaged on the fork from the shift rail in the top. I'm pretty sure you'll have to have the shift fork on the shift drum and have all that together and then put the top on engaging the two shift forks together.

Don't know how much you know about the transmission, so if this is redundant information, just chuck my post.

Make sure that the 3 springs and struts are still in their proper position. If the 5th gear/reverse synchronizer sleeve is in any other postion than the center your 5th/reverse shift rail and fork are working. If the sleeve is in the center position, it sounds like your shift rail didn't move the reverse fork. The shift rail will be on the right hand side of the cover as you look at the top of your transmission as it is installed in the truck. Do you have the older cover or the newer one? They are pretty much the same.

I sympathize with you, my shifter came out of 5th and was in the center but the transmission was stuck in 5th gear. Had to put it into 4 low to get it home. First time I was ever able to drive in neutral. :-laf

Anywise, hope this helps.

Well I pulled it apart and found that the shift fork had come out of the slot that goes into the lever for the 5th gear synchro shaft. Put it back together and it works fine. Pretty easy fix. Thanks for the help.

Glad you got it fixed. That's what I thought it would be. After having it apart did you figure out if there could have been a way to do it without pulling the top for future reference?
