when loaded heavy pulling a grade i can hit 1500deg after 2-3 miles. is that normal when i still have 3-4 miles to go? is it safe?

i try to keep my foot out of it and stay between 1200-1300 but other than a intake and a delete of the muffler my truck is stock. i have not lost boost just the the egt's seem high to me. turbo may be good at those temps but what about my cylinders?

BTW

way out of warranty at 200K

You really need to downshift and get the rpms up to 2400-3000. You are below the motor sweet spot and it is dumping fuel and the turbo is not spooling fast enough to pull in fresh air. It is always better to be at high RPMs then low when pullign up a hill.

Sounds too high to me. Keeping rpm's to at least 1600 will help some if you aren't already doing that. I would probably lose the EdgeEZ and get a SmartyJR - supposedly drops EGT's about 150 to 200 degrees.

Define 'loaded heavy"? When pulling a long grade I like to keep my RPM's up to at least 2300 or so, sometimes will drop to 5th and spin her about 2800 or so.

Lose the Edge and lose the EGT's. They always seem to run a little hotter than anything else and have been known to cause piston damage. Your pushing it at 1500, 1400 as max is about Cummins would tell you if they could/would.

Stack the edge with a Smarty and you wil generally see some better results.

Curious as others, at what rpm are you seeing these temps?

when i get the rpm up it seems to compound the issue thats where i get the hi egts i am seeing what your saying but spooled out it gets hotter

best i found is find a happy gear and med. foot feed at 1200-1300

Yes, 1,500F is too high if left at this temp for too long with your year of truck/engine. The safe limit for our year of truck/engine is 1,250F. The newer truck/engines are designed up to 1,500F EGT.

I see in your tag line you have a Edge EZ. To me no matter what brand of power adder you use, this is not stock.

Just to compaire numbers for your info, I just pulled the steepest grade I have ever been on, even steeper than the Colorado I-70. It was on the 101, North of Trinidad going to Crescent City California.

I pulled my toyhauler, weight of it on that trip was 10,000 lbs. Truck weight with passengers 7,500 lbs. Total combind is 17,500 lbs.

My only mods are airflow, no fuel. No CAT, no muffler, high flow intake, high flow airfilter, no sound vane in the air inlet track, and using a TAG.

I made the highest boost ever on that trip, 25 PSI in 5th and 4th gears. Could not pull 6th gear at all, only 23 PSI, the factory setting. I had to downshift to 4th gear because I could not maintain 5th gear, it was that steep. In 4th gear the RPM was 2,900 (peak H/P) and holding speed with reserve throttle left. The EGT in 4th gear was 1,250 F. My probe is before the turbo, in the exhaust manifold.

loaded heavy probably 24K-30K

truck included sHHHHHHH dont tell anyone

i pull in 4th on these grades at 40-45mph and have room to back out to keep egts down 5th is too much just wont pull

Yeah, you need better air, not neccessarily more, at those weights. Even then you are pushig the limits of the configuraton to keep things cool. Lower gears would help also I am thinking.

get a boost adjustable elbo for the turbo, this will allow 5-6 more psi of boost which will help alot.

also running in third 3/4-wot will help make things cooler, because it moves more air in the cylinders and makes the load seem lighter.

one other thing is water meth injection, would give you a big egt reduction and more mpg/power too. snow performance makes very nice and easy to install kitsOo.

Please explane the "boost adjustable elbow" I do not understand.

I wish I had a water/methonal injection setup on my last trip as I described above. Just might have been able to stay in 5th gear with the decrease EGT and more power ?

I've pulled similar loads up hills but probably not in as warm of ambient temps. With the Jr 1250 is as hot as she'll get. It takes a long time to get her that hot. I downshift at 1700 rpm and don't take her over 2700. Now with the 351, ats manifold and 4" exhaust she really hauls. I don't hardly need to downshift any more and the stock clutch is still holding out. My mods seem to work for me and aren't all that pricey to do.

I will not run my trouck over 1250 Your gauge should be marked in red at 1300 that is to tell you to back out of it !!

a boost elbow makes the boost on your stock turbo, adjustable. useally higher boost means cooler temps.

this coulped with water/meth is a great towing combo. most swear by it. :D

Bob,

Call me and I will give you a deal on our E-Boost Street.

You can turn up the boost a pound or two, or whatever you like. The EGT's came down a little too.

The best feature is the gate pressure adjustment! You would not beleive my truck has the stock turbo the way it responds. Oo.

hauled within reason this week 20-22K gvw

no issues in 4th up the steep grades but i keep it @2200-2300 still at full boost (24psi)

if i up the r's it gets hot i pretty well maintain full boost down to 1800 even down to 1500-1600 before i downshift i dont gat hot

anything over 2300 heats my egts?

with a boost elbow wont the charge air be higher (more psi=more charge air heat) where do i get an adj boost ell??????

water meth is nice and helps had it on my 2000 ctd

would a smarty jr really help? heard they do but just doednt seem right more power/less egt???????
