STOCK 96 3500 needs some more go

A friend of mine has a 96 3500 Auto(lol) and was wondering what can be done to increase the hill pulling power and not anger the transmission any. He pulls a 30' 5th wheel.



Can the stock plate be slid forward and the AFC tweeked a little?? If so how is this done? Or is it best to just buy a plate to get an HP gain instead of jacking with the stock stuff? He just had the pump timing checked and had a "tune up" done on it so the truck is in good running order as it is. I tried to get him to add a VP44 and 12 more valves but no luck

Hey Bad340, tell your friend to check out the TST site. On the site is documentation on how to install one of their plates. The same thing holds for sliding the stock plate forward. I moved mine forward, and was very pleased with the change in the trucks passing ability. Play a little with the AFC also. Finally, get rid of the cat, if it hasn't been done already. The transmission won't have any problems with the power increase.

Unfortunately, more power won't be too noticable with that "Squishy Transmission". Tell you friend to do a shift kit and TC. That made a bigger difference than my #5 plate. I recommend the Goerend Brothers TC, I was quite happy and Dave is a super guy. Link on the links page.



After that, do some injectors, they also made a bigger difference than my plate. I could slide the plate but it already smokes anough as it is. Bigger injectors will also be easier on the pump than a plate.

I agree with Extreme1 about the transmission. I did some power work to my '96 and did not see the real benifit untill the transmission and t/c work was done. So as not to restart any old flames I would suggest "searching" old posts and pick who you want to do your work. I am happy with mine and that is all that really counts anyway.

Keep in mind that if he is towing that 5th wheel, sliding the stock plate will increase EGTs substantially, so recommend some guages to him as well, for his own sake... Better safe than sorry.
