Time for another "royal rumble". LETS GET IT ON!!!!

I saw the Scotty system on his webpage, and have heard many speak highly of it. Honestly, it looks like the stock set up, only with a round filter instead of the square box.

The square box *looks* like it filters more air because of its size. How does the stock box with a clean K&N flow compared to the Scotty?

Is the Scotty system for better flow when boost is over 20 psi, and flows the same as the stock one below 20 psi boost?

Chad, I believe the Physcotty system advantage is in the high pressure area that's tapped into at the base of the windshield via the fresh air duct box. Not only are you getting cooler air, but you get a ram effect, which ='s good stuff.
 
Pretty neat then if thats how it works. Its safe to say then that the Scotty system is not only better for flowing more air, but also cooler air for those with massive cylinder temps.

Is the 4. 5" hole in the fire wall to locate the end of the filter or is air being drawn into filter along the axis?

Not real sure that I like the idea of cutting a 4. 5" diameter hole in the firewall - isn't that area structural?

The hole is for the air to come into the filter housing. The housing is open on the end that penetrates the firewall.
The area which is cut is NOT structural- you cut just inside a welded brace- no problemo.

A few more points:
The hole is easily covered with a piece of tin, a couple of screws and a little goop if you decide to take it off.
It has an opening at the base of the filter to allow some air intake if your windshield/intake area is covered with snow. Once the snow is melted after a good warm up the ram effect will negate any inside air intake so you get nothing but cool forced air.
The system is simple and looks cool.
You guys that pull the turbo ring will LOVE the sound!

Question regarding the Pyscotty Air System -

How does it affect the airflow of the vents, A/C and heater? Any effects at all? The reason I am asking is it gets rather humid here in Omaha and I would hate to take away any of the A/C cooling ability.

So you people out there please give me some feedback on this matter.
 
This doesnt add up. We all understand the importance of the air intake system. As for "ram air", no such animal on our turbo charged engines. Regardless of how fast you stuff the air into the system, if its not as fast as the air current being pulled by the turbo, your wasting your time. Kind of like ******* down a 500 foot waterfall expecting to speed the waterfall up... you aint going to do it.

Now, hot air is less dense than cool air meaning the hot air contains less oxygen, which means reduced output in power if your air gets too hot.

HOWEVER. . excesively cold air is even worse on the combustion in a diesel than hot air. Cold air delays ignition and retards the burning of fuel. According to the books at work, for every 20 degree drop in intake temp results in a 60 degree drop in combustion air temp at the end of the compression stroke. A drop like that can lead to ignition lag, loss of power and fuel mileage (this explains some of the fuel consumption improvements everyone was going on about when winter broke), oil dilution and carbon and sludge formation.

With this said, we are talking *cold* air like winter time cold. They say 60-90 degrees is the range diesels do best in. If you do have one of these Scotty air systems, make sure when winter time comes you do something to keep from "ram" airing that 20 degree air into your combustion chamber.

I've had the Scotty system on my ISB now for about a month and I think it does get more/cooler air than stock and I haven't noticed any decrease in A/C performance but there is increased wind/whistling noise from behind the glove box area when you get into the power alittle. I wouldn't mind the increased air noise if it wasn't for the whistling that goes along with it. Haven't heard too many others talking about that so I just thought it was bothering me more than most others. I've tried to close up some of the gaps, places where that noise could be generating from but I'm not satisfied. Should be installing a AirBullDog Hood from Doug Hofeldt within the next week or two.
I think the Scotty system is adequate for a simple/quick/cheap upgrade and would be a great upgrade, in my view, if it weren't for the whistling.
I'm new to this group and have done alot of Bombing lately and will post my experiences with everything when the Air BullDog Hood installed. I'll have some pics on a web site too.
 
What is an "air bulldog hood"? I have seen pictures of Dakotas with shaker hoods like the Cudas and Challengers had. I think one would be neater than hell on a big Dodge with a "Cummins 5. 9" in place of the "340 Cuda".

Are you referring to a naturally aspirated or turbocharged diesel with the 60-90 deg inlet air temp?

The compressor significantly raises the air temp & pressure and the aftercooler (technically it is NOT an intercooler) does it's best to bring the temp back down w/o causing a significant drop in pressure.

Turbo charged and aftercooled. I understood it that its the same for a nat asp engine as well.

I don't think the air temperature coming from the cowling is any different than the air coming from the stock air box set up or for that matter the air under the hood while moving.
What Scotty found (he says by accident) is there is a natural pressure in the cowling due to the aerodynamics of the hood and windshield and he wanted to take advantage of it. HAving some air pushing into the turbo has to be better than just letting the turbo suck. Lots of guys have noticed a decrease of EGTs with this system.
Like rotohead, I don't like any more noise than I have to have so I sold mine and simply covered up the hole. With my mods and living in the desert, I prefer to go with the stock box and filter. Scott is doing some noise experimenting to remedy this for folks who see it as a problem. Guys who remove the silencer ring should love it!

A couple added notes. 1) Decreasing inlet air temp DOES in fact raise cylinder pressures significantly. Cold air, ambient, fuel, hot block, big boom (cylinder fire). For every 100 degree drop in intake temp, add one pound of boost with equating HP, subtract 100 degrees EGT. 2) Forced air to turbo does raise compressor pressure and lower crossover temps. If it didn't, you would have never seen the advent of multiple turbos or blower fed turbos, and vice versa. You may not see it on our units, but you have a 2+ pound drop at the aftercooler, due to volumization (little air box blowing into a big one, then out another little hole). 3)Cowl induction is an excellent form of forced air. Add one In/Hg pressure for 5 MPH. Chevelles were the big start in '70. If the air coming over the hood and swirling down didn't make a downward air spike in the back, airplanes could not fly. They get lift from the downward swirl and vaccuum created below it. A Dodge hood is a pretty large "wing"... T
