hi gang-- sorry to revisit this but i still have some questions...

i read somewhere that the rear speakers have a resistor that

limits them to mid-range only. is this true? from the sound of my rears, i would say yes. is this resistor at the speaker or somewhere in line? would having the speakers re-wired eliminate this problem?

i'm going to replace this system but i have to do it very piece-meal. if i can re-wire and improve a little, it'll save me a step later on.

any and all input is welcome and appreciated. TDR rules.

I'm no expert on sound, but I'll tell you what I know. The "resistors" you speak of are actually called crossovers. The job of these crossovers is to fine tune the signal going to the speaker it is in-line with to within the limits of the speaker. As you may know, all speakers are rated to respond to specified ranges of frequency. Trying to feed lower or higher frequencies to the speaker than it will take will only damage or destroy the speaker. Crossovers can be separate units located in-line with or on the speaker, or they can be integrated into the head unit. I don't know off hand where they are in your truck, or if they are there at all. If you are looking for a high-power system that is acoustically tuned to your truck, then your best bet is to re-wire with heavy guage and heavily insulated audio wire, and use electronic (not passive) crossovers with your new system.

**Also: If you want a good quality, powerful subwoofer, JL Audio makes a unit already in an enclosure that fits right under the center front seat. I think its called a "Stealth Sub or Stealth enclosure".

If you have the infinity system just get a good quality radio. The factory speakers are really nice for coming factory and an aftermarket reciever will make them sound like they should. Then all you have to do is add a sub and amp if you want.
