I now have 25,000 miles on my '99 QC and am redy to move forward. I have been reading all the Posts and all the varying opinions and am now totally *^#$ed-up. I would like to start by determining what modifications, if any, that can be made without doing anything to the stock auto. I would also like to know how many others are upset that the auto ALWAYS starts in the OD mode and you have to deselect it. Is there a way to reverse this procedure and start without the transmission being in OD. As you might be able to tell by now, I haven't owned any automatics before. Been driving on and off road since '58, but with stick.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

You should be able to install some relatively minor power mods like the 275's or DDI's without hurting the auto if you drive sane. I of know several Ram's running around with these combos that have quite a few miles on them and no transmission problems. You might be able to use the VA with the stock auto, but I'm not sure about that one. Do a search and look for some of the older posts, I'm sure you'll find some very interesting reading. I don't think that the auto is as bad as some will try to make you believe. I don't know anything about how to make the transmission start in 3rd instead of OD... sorry. You might get in touch with Bill Kondolay at 1-604-504-4002. He is very helpful and knowledgable.

Good luck!
Mike

John, you can do several things to the motor and get some good power increases without worrying about the transmission. Even stock if you try hard enough you can tear up either transmission(auto or stick). Your truck can handle the injectors or a VA box with no problem. Be careful of the advice you get from these guys with the stick shifts, Their jealous of us who can drink coffee smoke a cigarette and drive at the same time #ad

A few yrs ago on the DiRT mailing list people we're purchasing a solenoid, available from alarm installers, that was suppose to switch the default when you start your truck so the O/D is OFF. Seems that this would work in some trucks but not in others. Never did hear if there was a better fix. I have one of those solenoid's sitting around here somewhere, if your still interested I could rummage around and find out what part# it is.

John,
I now have 55,000 miles on MEGARAM. I added the JRE 4" exhaust, VA CPC, K&N "stock box" type and gauges on the "A" pillar. No problems with auto at all and I now have plebty of power to pull our 8,000 lb race trailer over any hill or mountain. Ted Jannetty recommended these mods without having to upgrade transmission. He was dead on! Give him a call.

Just setting here Looking at TDR with one eye and the "manual" for my newly arrived, but not installed, BD torque-loc with the other eye.

The unit has a built-in switch option to "invert" the o/d -- meaning that you start off with o/d disabled and you have to push the o/d button to allow it to engage.

nelson buck is correct. I installed the torque lock and it starts out with overdrive locked out unless I set a switch otherwise.

This is only after the first start. Next time you stop it will start in the same mode as when you stopped unless you turn off your ignition.

Don't get confused, though. When you start out from a stop the overdrive is never engaged. The OD switch only locks out the ability of the A/T to shift from 3rd to overdrive after the right speed is reached. It has nothing to do with shifts from 1st to 2nd and then to 3rd.

i have a 2000 with auto trans and have put close to 10k miles on it withthe VA ,275's and boost module and JRE 4" exhaust , i don't attempt to do many burnouts , and only get on it when up to speed , but it will start from a standing start quickly . i have dragged race it on 3 occasions , and it is still working fine .
the addition of the PE has now made it necessary to upgrade the trans . in my hot 3 and with the VA and 275 combo i have slipped the convertor , never did till now. i'm not saying that the VA and 275 combo is not a trans killer , depends on how you drive . also i don't tow , so this combo would probably effect the trans different if i did , BOMB cautiously and wisely
