That may be just about right. I've been told my 98. 5 should be waste gated at 18psi, and set over boost code at 22?

That said, I had 25-26 psi stock with no codes.

Hose clamps might be tight, but double check to see they havn't moved and are allowing the hose to leak.

Sorry, but my summary is "you may or may not have a problem"

Back in the day when those models were current and I was doing performance verification on stock trucks,I would see 18-19psi. You will never find small boost leaks with out pressurizing the system and doing a leak ck.

I had one the other day that was a bit easier to find. During a h/g replacement(done elsewhere)the installer did not take enough care in gasket placement under the heater grid. Modified 12v capable of 40 psi was only able to acheive 20psi. #ad

I would check all the boots and clamps in the system. . just give them all a turn or two, especially if you have never done this before. After that pressurize the system and see what you can find.

I've checked the hoses (what I can see of them) and snugged the clamps several times. The 16 psi has been this way for several years... .....

I just keep reading parts of other threads where STOCK trucks have more boost. Thanks everyone.

On my 02' with just Edge EZ, intake, and exhaust all i see is 18-19 lbs max. No boost leaks or anything thats just what she runs! I bought a J-hook for it a year ago and it has just been bouncing around in my center console!

Also check the torque on the bolts holding the intake elbow down to the head, the ones that go though the grid heater. If I remember right, the torque is around 18 ft. lbs. Mine loosened up after time and I was loosing some boost pressure there at the gaskets because of the loose joint. It wouldn't hurt to check the torque on all the intake cover plate bolts there while you were at it. If they are tight, then I would move on to what Bob4x4 & JR2 said, that you should rig up a way to pressurize the system with air and run around everything with a spray bottle with soapy water looking for your leak. Make sure you check your gauge against another to make sure it reading correctly. My truck ran in the 18 to 19 psi. range when it was stock.

Regards, Mike.

First thing I'd do is see if the wastegate is doing it or if it's something other than that. Use a brake line clamp (I have also used small, needle nose type vice grips with a 3/8" hose slipped over the jaws) and clamp off the wastegate line. Take the truck for a drive and get on it hard in 4th and 5th. It should get to peak boost by 2400rpm in either gear, so you don't have to run it out to 3000rpm or anything... just let it build from 1600rpm or so in either gear. If the boost goes higher, I'd look at why. If it doesn't, that rules out possibility #1.

Hey Crash, I got ya beat by 1psi. . . my stock '98 (except for the Bosch 300 injectors) cranked up a whopping 17psi!! I went all over it, no boost leak to be found. Turns out that's where the wastegate was set. It would make 14-15psi fine but getting the needle past there really required mashing the throttle.

One boost elbow later and I'm making 27psi, and it definitely cooled the pyro more than 150F.

There is also an o-ring at the 90* elbow coming off the turbo too.

I had a whine noise and went through all the clamps and boots and they were good. then remembered the o ring and sure enough it was only half there. so you might be losing some boost there too.
