On my 01 it was a factory recommended and dealer installed accessory. It's a Jacobs that comes ready to plug and play. Your truck's computer was built to take it. I'm not sure what they're doing for the 06 but a quick call to the dealer probably would get the info. I actually didn't know they offered it until I saw it online in Dodge's website.
The Dodge recommended Jacobs exhaust brake for your '06 is an entirely different device than the one on your brother's '08. The '08 provides exhaust back pressure by means of a "variable geometry" turbocharger, while the Jacobs e-brake is a valve in the exhaust following the turbocharger. While the Jacobs is fairly effective (I have one) from what I have read, the newer turbo brake is even more effective, so you probably won't get quite the same results as your brother if you install the Jacobs.
JIMBOB24 Thanks for the insight on this. how do you like your Jacobs, if you had to do it over again would you install a Jacobs again? Alot of people leaning towards the Pacbrake on this site.
I have an '06, 6 speed that I bought new and installed the Jake brake within the first 10000 miles. I now have almost 60000 and have never had a problem with the brake or the truck. I leave the Jake brake engaged 90% of the time. It installed easily, quickly and efficiently. JH
I have the jake. I had the dodge dealer install it. I have ran all over AZ. NM. CAL. TX. pulling 17,000lb+ my brakes are still in good shape. If I did not have the jake I would be replacing the brakes on trailer and truck. I also use it in heavy traffic this also save on the brakes. IT is a very place to put your money. ---BEN

I chose the Jacobs primarily because it was the Dodge approved system and I figured that this was the safest route to go considering warranty issues. I am satisfied with it and have had no problems at all. I use it every day. I also would not hesitate to go the Pacbrake route either if I had not chosen Jacobs. Many people like the Pacbrake because it uses pressure from an external compressor to activate it instead of the vacuum pump for the Jacobs which is driven by the serpentine belt system. A few have reported vacuum pump failures with the Jacobs but I doubt that it is a high percentage of failures, and I have had no problems at all with mine.
Between the two I would say it is a matter of personal preference and which one you feel the most comfortable with as well as the best deal you can get. Either way, you will be pleased.
I was talking with an engineer friend of mine about the vacuum pump on the Jacobs vs the air compressor on the Pac and he made a good point. A vacuum pump and an air compressor are essentially the same machine, just running in opposite directions. Of course, the Jacobs is powered directly off the engine in the earlier models and in the hpcr trucks off the belt whereas the Pac compressor I'm assuming is electric. Other than that, they are both pumping air. Just one pumps into a tank or a pressurized system and the other pumps the air out of the system into the atmosphere.
I dumped my Jake after 4 vacuum pump failures. There have been more then a few pump failures, do a search. There are many threads on the subject. I switched to the pac because of the problems with the Jake and with the twins I needed an in-line brake. In my case I already had an air pump for the bags so it made sence. I also think the quality and support is better from pac. BTW, the vac pump does make noise and it my case it was loudest part of the engine.
