Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Stock fuel heater circuit

I'm thinking about adding a fuel heater between FASS and the tank for the winter. Is the stock heater circuit run by a relay? or whould I have to run a relay to the new fuel heater tapped off of the stock circuit? I would want to run the new heater off of the stock plug/circuit so that it functioned like the stock heater. Also I assume that it would need to be a 12volt heater but how many watts?



Can anyone suggest a heater that would work for what I want? Has anyone done an install like this?

fuel heater

I ran my FASS pump all Winter with out any problems at all. It saw below zero temps with little change in fuel pressure, that's running a 3 micron filter. Not sure if it is my 1/2" suction line in the tank or just luck, I also run Stanadyne Performance Formula year round. I think the thermostat for the O. E. M fuel heater is built into the stock filter housing, not sure how you would wire into that. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply GKinney, im just up in Ann Arbor, so we would have seen the same temps last year. I run Standayne too. Hopefully I wont have a problem, but Mr Murphy tends to seek me out! I was worried about the filter ( I run a 2micron NAPA) but if you didnt have any problems with the 3micron hopefully I wont have any problems with the 2micron.

I'm in the process of putting a Racor filter in mine back by the tank. Pusher Pump too. The Racor is heated and the heater element is internally temp controlled/actuated so no need to tap into stock heating circuit. I installed an aftermarket switched fuse block last year so I think I will just wire it into that so the heater + is hot whenever the ignition is on. Just another idea.

Thanks Deon. Thats a good idea. I was looking at a Racor stand alone heater that is interanally controlled by its own thermo.



Any one know what size heater would be needed? The one i was looking at comes in a 300 and a 600 watt (I think) model.

fuel heater

I think that the factory heater is 135 W. The Raycor is a good filter and I didn't buy the heater option when I bought the 445. I would have it controled by the factory heater / to the coil of a relay and a seperate feed for the relay and put fuse in line before the relay by the battery. Run a # 12 pair this will get away from bad grounds in the future.
