Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Stock HX35 Boost

i have a 2001 cummins with a 5 speed and i pluged off the wastegate on my turbo and put a gauge on the intake an old oil pressure guage works good til i hooked my truck up to a scan tool the gauge said i was getting around 28psi of boost which i though was ok but the sensor in my truck recorded a boost pressure of 254 kpa which i think is just under 37psi can my stock hx35 produce this much boost or is the sensor show my truck the wrong reading and does this truck defuel when it hits this high boost

I have the edge juice with attitude and with it on level 5 i can make my hx35 hit 30 psi. You dont say what you have done as far as performance mods in you signature so I will assume it is stock, and if it is I dont think you could make it hit 37, you need lots of fuel to make that much boost. BTW my wastgate is shut on my turbo as well. I have heard of people hitting the lower 40's with their hx35 though, but like I said that's with a lot of fuel. Also, as far as the truck defueling at high boost, I believe you are correct in that assumption. I think it does defuel unless you have a boost fooler or a box that has a boost fooler built in.

all my truck has is 50hp injector and a aem intake with a k and n filter and straight pipes so i think i might need to get a new boost sensor

My Smarty can easily hit 35 psi. And that is with the TST off. Beyond 35 psi the stock turbo is no longer in its efficiency map.

Your gauge is ok,The sensor reads MAP=atmosheric pressure(14-15 psi)+ boost pressure.

My friend, when he plugged his wastegate on his 02, put a boost fooler on his truck. The guage on his truck says his hx35 can go as high as 45 psi under full throttle

as was stated earlier, the HX35 is going off its map @ 35psi. Boost beyond that is hot air AND CAN DESTROY THE TURBO AND POSSIBLY YOUR ENGINE. The factory put gates on there for a reason. Plugging them off is NOT a good idea.

My truck with the tst powermax on level 9 can hit 41 psi boost at WOT, I don't ever use level 9 but i usually use level 1 -3 and I keep the boost under 35 psi.

IIRC, the HX-35 is good to about 28 PSI of boost after which any increase in pressure is due to heat rather than more air molecules.

28 PSI of dense air? Or 40 PSI of thin, super-heated air that has only a few more air molecules than the 28 PSI air? I think the choice is a no-brainer.

Y'all'd be better off building a set of twins using a pair of compounded HX35s.

MAP means Manifold Absolute Pressure. At sea level you would read 14. 7 PSI without the engine running.

i have a banks intake, a k&n, a griffin cooler, and smarty on 4. i only get 25. i am thinking that is more due to the griffin. anyone know where to get a flow meter for these things? i think that would be more informative than measuring back pressure.

Adjustable boost elbow or other device should be used and adjusted to limit boost to no more than 35 psi in my opinion. I personally have mine restricted to not exceed 30 psi which works for me in my applications.

I didn't say i'd try going to 45 psi, i'm saying the truck went that far. To complete the story, I have driven the truck (with guage in truck) to see it reach 40 psi while I was driving it. To validate your story, when it started goin over 32-35 psi, the pyro would clime over 1300 and go as high as 1600 degrees. To end the story, this friend did take the stocker off for a BD unit.

We have a local up here that pushed a stock HX35 to 60psi! he did grenade it, but dang!
