This gets asked all the time, and no one knows "for sure". I suspect it won't work; dead stock lift pump would be too much restriction.

That is kinda scary, no matter if you use your truck for work or it gets you to work that is a long time to wait for a truck to get fixed. I think my next mod is going to be some type of fuel delivery system other than stock.

If they dont get you fixed up I still have my orignal lp from my 03 you could have. it works fine just could not keep up with my fueling needs. Send me a pm if you need it. being stranded sux.

You can still get the canister mounted LP by calling a Cummins dealer. All you need is your VIN and about $300. I have a spare under the rear seat. If mine fails by the side of the road I can change it myself, or at least be towed somewhere that can do it ASAP without waiting for a pump kit.
 
My lift pump went out a couple of weeks ago and this is the story I was told. First--if your regular factory warranty is expired--(3 year 36,000 mile) you are responsible for paying your own towing cost. The lift pump is a warranty covered item with no deductable. The replacement pumps are on nation wide back order and the wait time can be up to 7-10 days if the dealer does not have one in stock. The dealers have been instructed to use the "old style" they have in stock however once they are gone the only pumps that Dodge will have is the in tank replacements. Cummins says that they still stock the old style pumps ($300) however they are not "officially" recommending the new style pump. The Cummins dealer I spoke with didn't think much of the in tank replacements.
 
Maybe a stupid question, but what becomes of the original LP if the dealer installs the 'tank' LP. Do they remove it or plumb around it?

How many miles did your pump last? FWIW I bought a spare Cummins LP and keep it with my truck. I hope Cummins continues to supply these.

The canister mounted LP is replaced with an adapter plate. The in-tank pump then pushes fuel to the fuel filter canister.
 
Would the Cummin dealer even have any feedback on the replacements? I would think not since no one on these sites do eaither really.

My truck is a 2003 with 70,000 miles and Edge EZ. I was tooling along most of the day at 68mph for the 600 some-odd miles. I managed 19. 2 mpg with a lot of head wind and the rpms at 1850. The EZ was on setting 4 and I had two short burst to around 100mph to get away from some semi's that were riding my tail.



I changed my fuel filter at 55,000 miles and I use no additives or B20 bio-diesel... I've only put regular Diesel in since I've had the truck which was at 27,000 miles.



I didn't even get a warning light ahead of time... it just lost power and died and I coasted to the side of the road with my 2 year old sleeping in the back seat. I hope they're not back ordered like I hear... does anyone know someone with a spare lift pump that would work on my 03? I'm thinking FedEx!



Are there any good Diesel shops around Southern Idaho that could put a FASS system on my truck if it looks like I won't see a lift pump for 2 weeks... I'm 800 miles from home! Call me at 303. 349. 1294 if you have any ideas... I forgot my TDR travel companion as well!



How did this situation work out? I know the dealership was going to install the intank pump. Did that work out fine? How long were you down? Was it covered under warranty or did you have to pay, out of pocket?

I broke down at 2am Sunday night... By 2:30pm Monday I was buckeling my kid back into the truck and heading up to Washington.



As it was mentioned this was covered under the Cummins Engine 100,000 mile warrantly so my cost was zero. I'll scan the invoice as a PDF so everyone can see the parts list.



I was really happy with the service at Bonanza Motors in Burley, ID. They had the retrofit Lift-Pump in stock which really helped my situation. If they didn't have the new lift pump it would have been a long wait.



I would have had to source a Cummins lift pump and install it myself because with 75+ on backorder I would have had to leave my truck their for several weeks just waiting on the new 05 pump :(

The truck had 49000 miles on it. This is the second pump they have put in. The first one went out at 29000. Yesterday I found out that after they installed the new pump the fuel gauge did not work. The gauge showed over a half a tank and I put 21 gal in it. The dealer said they would have to install a new in tank lift pump as the new pump assembly also has the fuel gauge float included. They said they had received a service bulletin about this problem. The cummins dealer I talk to did not indicate they were going to quit stocking the old style pump. My only question is after they install the new style and if it quit working could you put the old style back on(your spare) and drive without taking the bad lp out of the tank. I don't think so but I'm not sure??????? Besides it doesn't sound like much fun to me to try to drop the tank on the side of the road. Your only advantage would be having a spare pump once you got to a dealer or somewhere you could have it installed.

Thank you for the information. That wasn't very many miles for your first pump. I only have 29K on my truck and would really rather not have a LP failure out of the blue.



I think once the in-tank modification is made that is it. To put a canister mounted pump back on would require a new power source as the original one is routed to the new in-tank pump.



One reason I am resisting the in-tank mod is that I have an American Tank aux bed tank and it is designed for the canister mounted LP on the 04. 5s and earlier. Aux tanks they make for '05s and up have in-tank pumps also so when the tank is switched it powers up the aux tank fuel pump. I suppose I could install a fuel pump in my aux tank if it comes to that. It's too bad we need to still be fretting over LP reliability with such an otherwise tough engine.
 
I am assuming my '06 has an in tank pump? As I have only had it a week, I am still learning all the differences. I do know they run less pressure than my '01. Completely different system... ... . VP to common rail. I figure I will install a pressure gauge and monitor it like usual and when/if it appears to be dropping in pressure, I will replace it. I figure it would be best to go with something like a FASS like I did on my '01. I guess the in tank pump would have to be removed with some sort of pick up tube installed. I'm curious though whether the higher pressure FASS works ok with the new lower pressure requirements. Can you put too much pressure into these systems or are there mods or bypasses required.
