I was wondering what the generally accepted max hp you can send through a stock 48re is?? I tried the search put couldn't get the words to pull up what I was looking for

Heh. . . I was going to post the same thing. Big Bob mentioned to me you can go about 100hp over stock (so that tells me 350-370 to the rear wheels should be OK). Of course with the added power comes the responsibility of using it properly, and installing a trans temp gauge.

I would put on a replacement transmission pan that adds more fluid.

I just went with the PML aluminum transmission pan and rear end cover, the transmission pan adds two more quarts of fluid and with the rear end cover I get five quarts of rear end lube in the housing now.

The PML parts are very nice pieces, I would buy them again because the price is right compared to the other options on the market.

These items should assist the tramission and rear end to run cooler and last longer.

The PML covers add drain plugs with magnets to catch any metal shavings.

dodgestang in another post rolled a 402hp on the dyno, is this pushing it for the 48re, I will be getting an 06 and will be using the truck for work, and don't wanna pay extra or break the trans, but 400 ponies at the tires sounds pretty darn good

It won't take 402 for long,In my opinion 350 at the wheels is pushing it if you are using it.

Bob

Yeah, 402 on the dyno is not the same as 402 on the road. A lot will depend on how you use it and push it. Once you overun the ability of the converter to hold lockup or the clutches to hold the load your done. That can happen at 300 HP or 500 HP so its not a hard and fast rule. If its a daily driver and you show restraint you could have 500 HP at the rear wheels and not have a problem. ;)

If you want it to last, I would go about 80 HP. It will take 100 HP but you are at the upper lever of the HP that the 48RE will hold without damage. 80 HP is just about right, unless you want to invest in another transmission.

leave it stock if you want it to last a long time. if you want to play a little put an adjustable box on it for those occasional high speed runs and turn off when towing.

with that said dads 48re holds a 140hp quad box but barely. he leaves it on 60hp setting for everyday and turns it on 30 for towing. this is a great box for the $$ and function!!! (dont sell them either) 30-60-100-140

how much does that elimantor box add?? what is the major limiting factor keeping the trans from holding the power, If you just changed out the vavle body with an after market one, will that make the 140hp box doable or is the full 9 yards with TC necessary.

I will be towing a trailer quite a bit around town, my thinking is shut off the box totally when I tow the trailer, and crank the box for some fun when I don't have the trailer on

I`ts all in the right foot baby!!!!, I have shelled 2 flex plates, & 1 torque converter. 16,000 Miles & I havent tore the 48re out yet. Now mind you that when I hook up a big load I turn everything down, But so far scooting around town bobtail, its ok. I dont know the hp #s of my truck yet, but it does feel like something is going to break. Someday, hopefully not soon :-laf

I rolled a 422 at fall brawl last year and that transmission doesn't seem to be a s healthy as it used to be. As soon as my new pml transmission pan gets here I am changing the fluid.
