ecarney, I learned the hard way on my '96 2500 that tires need to be rotated almost every 7000 miles. So I rotate them when I do an oil change.

I also have found out by looking at my tires that recomended inflation values were not right for how I have the truck loaded. I currently run with 58psi front and 40psi rears. I learned this over several rotations by checking the wear across the tread. Using 50psi on the fronts gave me more sholder wear and 80psi on the rear wore them out in the center. So I adjusted the pressure until I got the same wear across the whole tire. I get slightly better braking too in the I now have more of the tire in contact with the pavement.

Your buddy's tire wear could be caused be a lot of other factors: How hard he drives the truck, type of pavement he typically drives over, plus a lot of others...

My stock tires lasted only 28,000 miles, of course there is more to the story. With only about 8,000 miles on the truck Dad and I were pulling his 5er through Beaumont, TX and a little old lady pulled out in front of us and Dad had to push the brake pedal to the floor to get us to stop. All wheels locked up, smoke was all over the place and the smell of rubber... . well it was bad! Did not hit the lady, I doubt she even knew about 20,000 lbs were about to hit her.

Anyway the tires ended up with a flat spot on them that never went away. A local shop shaved the tires to true them up. They shaved about 15,000 miles off of them. I now own the truck and replaced the tires almost as soon as I bought it.
