Looking at getting a New Beetle TDI for the wife

A friend of mine has a '85 F-250 with a 6. 9 diesel and he was wondering what the stock HP and TQ ratings were. Thanks in advance for any info.

I think they are rated at negative numbers. LOL

I had one, what a pig. I think they are rated at 160 or 170 hp. Not sure about the torque.

My '83 6. 9 was 175 Hp at 3300 rpm. Not so sure on torque, but is probably around 350 Ft-Lbs at 2400 or there abouts. Not a barn burner but did get 18mpg every day in an extended cab F250 4WD. I towed 10,000 plus and it was ok until you hit the mountains.

Trust me guys, I rode in his truck before I even bought my diesels... and I agree with all... . gutless. Not gonna set any records. A while ago he said he'd like to sell it and buy a 1st gen.

Wirenut... That could have been a 6. 9? Not sure. The main reason I asked is because he doesn't know, but I have a 91 Cummins brochure which shows the non-turbo 7. 3 as a 180 hp, 345 tq motor.

That's probably right. The 7. 3 did not increase power much if at all. They needed displacement to meet emissions. You can add about 100 Hp with turbo and intercooler, any more and it WILL blow up. Stock, they are about a 250,000 - 300,000 mile engine if they are taken care of. At those miles they will need re-ringing and be using oil. Also, many 6. 9 had a block crack problem where they would crack between freeze plug holes on the starter side. Not a performance problem, but they seep coolant out the crack. I have tried to fix one once, but no luck. If you see any coolant or streaking on that side of the motor check it carefully. If it is comming from around the block heater, it is probably the block. Rumor is that IH let the castings cool too fast when they were made. This effects a lot of trucks. Many people never knew they had a problem. They can be a good economical truck, just don't expect the world out of one.

My '86 has a high altitude engine in it and is rated at 150hp. It's not fast, particularly in a head-wind, but it pulled any thing I threw at it. Alot of my pulling in the spring and fall is under 30-35mph and 7500lbs. or more and did O. K. I even pulled a 31,000lb. Mack truck with a 50' pot trailer when the turbo took a dump(this was BC). Banks claims some thing like 230hp with the Side-winder turbo kit. I priced it before getting the Dodge and it was somewhere between $2000-2700 depending if you get one with a wastegate or not. The ATS and Hypermax are quite a bit cheaper. Supposedly the Hypermax is the one on the factory 7. 3 IDI engines used in '93 and early '94.

A guy I work with has one with a Banks turbo kit, boost pyro etc. He bought it new and put the kit on with only 700mi on the truck. It's actually a nice lookin rig and in it's day was the way to go for towing his 5er. He's the first one to admit as soon as the cummins came out in '89 he was getting his *$$ kicked. Now it doesn't even come close to keeping up with the newer trucks. But... it does what he neads it too, tows the 5er and family and with only 45kmi will get him around for many years.

Take it easy

Mike
