I have a stock 98 1 ton dually, without a load I seem to have plenty of power, but when I tow my Newmar Mountain Aire (10000 lbs) I have very little power and cannot get any smoke. I have never had a diesel before except an 86 international in a Ford, so I had no comparison. I want to put a TST plate in but I need to be in Spec first. Has anyone had any lack of power to this degree? Just had 100K tuneup and asked the dealer, but they seemed disinterested even when I told them I was only getting 14 MPG. I have had 3 valve adjustments and use HAWSE treatment to keep the injectors clean and change air filters regularly.

98 extended cab dually 4X4, ranch hand eqpt stock motor.

improvement

This is soooo simple, you're gonna kick yerself!... You need to do 3 things, and that's really about it: (1) Buy guages, (2) buy a TST plate, and (3) get rid of the Cat. You just spent about $500, and both your performance and mileage will greatly inprove!! Let the BOMBing commence!!!!

Stock power?

Just a comment about stock power for these engines. What we get from Dodge is turned down. The real stock power is something like 300HP.

Giffin. . We have hauled about about 20,000lbs on a 96 3/4. . Only problem was keeping her under 75... That was with a stock truck. . 5sp. . with 3. 55's. . You didn't not mention which gears you have or trany. . the auto seem to need a little work to get where everyone want's. . but with a manual shifter. . you should not have any problems. . especially if you are running the 4. 10's. . Just MO here...

Good luck

Bryan

Griffin, 14 mpg's seems to be very much a subjective thing. Depends on how you drive, type of driving etc. etc.

Go through the posts. You'll have Mo'power real soon.

I'd say, a cam plate, and maybe bump up the timing.

Eric

PS You might want to get some gauges in there first.

First thing is to get the CAT out of there, which is the problem in the first place {maybe}. Get some good gauges, and buy a TST plate kit. You will see a big difference.

I appreciate the help. I guess I should clarify my signature a little more, 5 speed manual and 3:54 gears. From the responses I guess I'll do it by the numbers and get rid of the cat first and then get a TST plate, I am a believer in the motor if I can just get a little more power without breaking the bank.
