Stock Shocks

I've got a question on OE shocks. I have 30,000 miles on my truck and lately I have noticed when I stop the backend goes up and then drops when truck stops. I know this is normal but lately it seems more noticable. Could this be the shocks or something else. What is the life expectancy of OE shocks. Thanks for the info.

Craig, the stock shocks are crap. Try a set a Bilsteins from the TDR group purchase.

Rancho has a deal right now, buy 3 get the fourth one free. I paid $160 and some change from Summit racing, that incuded the shipping also. They are the 9000x series, I've had them on for about 2 weeks and really like them.

The stock shocks were JUNK when they came out of the crate to go on the truck. I had several sets of them free, not worth the time to have them put on. Buy some Rancho 9000's.

Almost anything is better than the stock shock absorbers! I replaced mine with 8,000 miles on the odo with KYB MonoMax shocks. A huge difference in ride and handling!

I've got 50K on my 01 4X4 and it looks like I may be needing shocks in the near future. I like the ride I have now and I'd rather not go softer or harder, so what would you guys recommend Rancho or Bilsteins?

I also want to improve my ride. I am quite sure that I'm going to get a set of Blistens in the next week or so. I've got a stupid question first. I have never changed shocks before. It looks fairly straightforward. Take out a few bolts, pull the shock and then bolt in the new one. Doesn't look like I need to lift the truck or use any special tools.



Am I right or is there something else that I should be aware of? Before someone thinks that this idiot shouldn't touch his truck I'll just say that I had never changed injectors before a couple of weeks ago but that went fine. I'd rather ask a dumb question first then start something that I can't finish.

Shock install

The driver's side front is the toughest, but not too bad. I had to jack up the truck (from the frame) to extend the suspension to have room to work. The other 3 were easy-left the truck on the ground. Had to lower the spare tire though.

What about those of us that have an extra 2. 5 inches of wheel travel in the front. I know my stock shocks up front will bang from metal to metal because over-extending them. Too short now.

Do a search on previous threads......

... ... . before you put Bilsteins on!!! I went into some detail, with many others chiming in on Bilstein shock sets that are being sold without all the necessary hardware. Do a search under Bilstein and you should find it in this forum. If you put the front ones on without the sleeves and new grommets, you are in for some fun down the road (literally). If your kit doesn't have the sleeves and grommets, you need to get with either Bilstein or whomever sold/sells you the kit and get it.



As for the ride, Bilsteins are pretty stiff on a shortbox quad cab 4x4 that is unloaded! However, with a load and/or pulling a trailer, they are quite nice.

My sentiments exactly! Of all the shocks I have changed out, the performance of these Bilsteins were the most dramatic improvement I have ever had on any vehicle. What do the Daimler bean counters think when they spec out such trash as the OEM shocks? I guess as long as we keep buying their junk they will keep giving us what ever they want.

Most places want between 130. 00 and 180. 00 for just spacers.



I paid 65. 99 each for the shocks, and 160. 00 for the springs.
