I've searched the TDR for others having this problem, with no success... But I might be doing something wrong. Anyway, my passenger side speaker cuts out. Although I haven't done alot of "testing"... OK call me lazy. I've noticed it more at higher volumes. (windows down) I'm expecting DC to say I blew the speaker from excessive volume...

Having a degree in electronics and a minor in audio/visual (tv's) I feel pretty confident that this isn't true. Speakers "generally" blow from over heating, due to the amplifier "clipping". (distortion). I guess I could investigate, but its possible that its the radio itself, which I won't know until I've taken the time to remove the door panel and... ... ... SO... any thoughts? Secondly, has anyone simply replaced the speakers with quality units, using the factory head unit? Any inprovement? Is it worth it? Been down the road of system replacement or should I say upgrade many times. But previous experiences with theft is my main hold back in doing so. Thanks, as always for your help... and patience to read what seems like a novel.

Still wishin I could put my M3's mile deep paint job on the truck. Or maybe I should wish to swap its perfectly engineered automatic. Or maybe... . Ah heck, Just wish BMW would start makin a truck using the ISB!

Sounds to me like a intermittant short in the voice coil or amp problem because it only happens a higher volumes. Amp clipping usually sounds like a nasty popping/rattling sound. Easy way to trouble shoot is find the speaker wires before they go into the door and cut and splice in a temporary replacement like a book shelf speaker and see if the problem goes away. If it goes away it's time for new speakers, if not a new head unit...

IMO - Factory head units and speakers are in the same catagory as factory shocks - cheap... I've always gotten a big improvement replacing both head unit and speakers with after market goods. I'm using an Alpine head unit, Morel SR 5. 2 in the doors, Peerless 85410 10" sub woofers behind the seats and KEF Coda 7's for rear fill. As Cartman would say "Sweet... " #ad

Hi Guys,
I don't have any suggestions for trying to diagnose your problem, but have another question to add.

If I have the stock speakers (not the infinity package) for the door, what size speakers would I need to get to replace them ? I had a Sony 10 disc CD changer installed and the guys at Circuit City tell me my driver's side door speaker is partially blown. Do I need to change anything else besides the door speakers ?

Thanks for the advise.

Phil,
Assuming your DS speaker is blown, My recommendation is to replace all four. 2 main reasons come to my mind. 1st. Sound quality. 4 speakers of equal sound quality will produce... well. . a better sound stage... If that makes sense. If you only change 1 or 2. . Your ears will notice the new one(s)and probably make the old ones sound mushy.
If budget permits the purchase of 2 new ones. . go for the fronts. If you adjust your fader correctly, the rears will do ok acting as "fill". Your question of what else should I replace... depends upon your goals and budget. If you just want sound again. You just need to replace speakers. Of course you know. . a little Dynamat in the doors wouldn't hurt, and maybe an amp and maybe... ... ... #ad
Just Kidding.

I agree about the Dynamat. Cover as much as you can. It will really cut down on road noise and help the sound quality of the stereo. I replaced all of my factory speakers with Polk Audio. I have a MTX amp under the center console with two MTX 10" subs in a box under the back seat. All is kept out of sight.

DYNAMAT!!!!! We covered almost the entire cab of my brother's Dakota with dynamat super, and you never hear a rattle out of it. Even with his 3 JL Audio 10W6's putting out 154. 7dB, the only thing that rattles is your teeth. #ad

If you want some really good sounding speakers, shell out the money for MB Quart. I have never heard anything that can reproduce a cymbol crash or snare drum (the really high frequencies) any better.

You may want to look into the new Dynamat Xtreme. I have just started installing this in my Ram. It is said to dampen four times better than Original Dynamat and two times better than Dynamat Super. I'm also adding their Dynaliner to the back cab wall (over the Xtreme), adding Dynaliner Max beneath the carpet and OE padding. I will also be adding Xtreme to the doors as well. I've already installed some Xtreme on my cowl prior to installing a new OE cowl pad.
