how much power can you create with your engine on the stock turbo, and still be able to tow? and what is the best way to create the power?

I was running 360RWHP/860RWTQ everyday NOT towing, but on the occasion that I did I usually had to keep an eye on the EGT guage.

I'd be willing to say without any modifications to the factory turbo what-so-ever that 350rwhp is about as much as you can safely make and still tow heavy.

Something to consider however is that a 14cm or 16cm NON-wastegated exhaust housings are decently priced and would allow you to run a little more power.

Also IMPO a plate is the best way to make power because it is adjustable to where ever YOU are comfortable with it EGT wise. I see that you already have a #6 in your truck and I've heard that that is a good plate for auto's, but without any work to you transmission I believe that's about as much as its going to take.

With a 160 pump you will need to work a little harder to get 350 RWHP. I'm not certain all that is will take to get there on a small pump. A #4 plate, 370 injectors, and timing bump will get you there on a 180 pump though.

Well the #4 plate is not listed on TST's HP chart, but the #5 is and its rated at 255HP/650TQ. So you should have more than that to start with. To get to 350RWHP all you should need is a set of 370's. Piers has them on sale this month if you have the green, if not Wildcat has them for the same price as Piers sale all year round.

With addition of the 370's however you might have EGT issues that would cause you to have to tune the fuel plate or get a bigger exhaust housing.

My experience towing with my stock turbo was that I could not use all the power that was available from my #11 plate in my 1996 manual truck while towing. I dynoed it at 288 hp. I upgraded my turbo with HT turbo's stage 3 compressor wheel and housing kit, and dyno'ed 308 hp and had no trouble keeping the EGTs under 1200 while towing. I normally tow right about 12,000#, at elevations ranging from 5200 to 10,500 feet. Higher altitude makes a huge difference when you get close to the lilmits on a stock turbo.

The #4 is about 20 more HP than a #5 on a 180 pump.

On a 160 pump I think it is going to take a little more than 370's and a #4 to get to 350RWHP. Also the "little" 160 pump may not like the 370's without a set of delivery valves and it will definitely need a bump in timing with all that fueling.

Your right cooker, I was second guessing myself as I typed that comment about *just* needed 370's.

Also I forgot all about needed DV's for 370's. DOH!

Emerald5. 9,

The answer to your first questions is :D :)

The MPG will be the same, (right foot controls), EGT will climb fast, so a EGT gauge is a must have.

crabman, so you like the 215's with the #6 combo? how is it towing? whats the power like? you know the numbers? i may be intersted to moving to that or 191dvs and 370's

I believe that I am in the 330hp range with my mods (see sig for mods and what I tow) and I cannot use all my power without EGT issues in the upper RPM range. Until about 2500-2600 RPM I am usually OK, but if I try to run it out to 2800-3000 then I have to pay attention so I don't get it hot. I'm going to install a 16cm housing and see what kind of difference it makes.

so the 215's are pretty drivable without DVs? whats your milage/smoke like? how are the EGTs unloaded?

you still have the stock transmission? hows it holding?

The 215's run fine in my truck without DV's, but do smoke a little more than the stock 175's.

Mileage running empty is about 19-21 on the freeway, but I don't do enough around town driving to have good numbers for that. I'd guess 15-17 though, from the little around town that I do.

The EGT's unloaded are fine until about 2800 on up. I only really have EGT issues if I'm racing/playing around if I'm running empty.

So far, so good on the stock transmission, I have the 5-speed, so there really aren't the same kind of issues that you will run into with the auto. For some reason my clutch still holds fine. I bought the truck used, so maybe the previous owner had it changed out for something better, but from the short time I spent talking to him before I bought the truck I can't see him having put anything but stock parts back on it if it did need clutch work.

Mike

I bought them used off a TDR member that bought 370's or something for his truck.

Yes, they are the stock injectors off of a 96-98. 4 truck with a 5-speed.

happy BOMBing,

Mike
