I bought a spare engine that I am going to disassemble and balance. It will probably sit until it's needed and a little concerned about the VP-44. Is there anything that I can do to keep it in shape? The pump looks real new and I don't want it to have problems when reinstalled. There should be some way to preserve it but I don't know how.

Where are you going to store the engine?? If you have a heated garage that will work ok. I would wrap the engine in plastic wrap after you get it set up the way you want.

I would also drop in a couple of decicat (absorbes moisture) pillows in the bottom of the plastic on the outside of the engine but inside the wrap in a plastic cup. Let these dry the atmoshpere within the wraped engine and then change them out after about 1 month with a new set. Seal it up and call it good for a few years.

When you get ready to install it, all you should have to do besides unwrapping it, should be to prime up the lube system with an outside pump through the accessory lube port on top of the filter with your 11 quarts of favorite oil, while rotating the engine over by hand.

1st tank of fuel throw in a couple of bottles of Power Service or Stanadyne and a couple of bottle of Marvel Mystre Oil and you should be good to go.

You should be ok. ;)

One time I completely wrapped a boat for storage. bout wrecked it!! If you do wrap it then you must do what Mundgyver sugggests,, that is to make sure no moisture can accumulate.

But even with that,, I think you should let it breathe. Just throw someting over it!

I suppose you could put it in a shipping crate or box of some type with a door on it. Keep the dust off of it and then use the top of the box for other storage or some sort of layout table or small parts and such. Big trick not to leave it outside or in an unheated shed or storage room. ;)
