Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Straight pipe exhaust question

Does straight piping ones exhaust have an effect on turbo life?? Ever since I hacked my muffler and cat off, the turbo makes that awesome scream(not complaining about the sound) between every shift and I was wondering if that scream is the same thing as the turbo surge one gets when pinning the throttle and backing off suddenly @ peak boost?? I was experimenting last night on the way home from work and I got the same scream from the turbo shifting as I did when I would "surge" it backing off the throttle @ peak boost without shifting. I remember the surge sounded a lot worse and more like a cough when I was running the muffler and cat. Is turbo surge worse or better with or without a muffler? I know there are blow off valves out there for this "surge" issue but I was just curious if one is needed when an exhaust is straight piped??

jgheen - nope it will not hurt the turbo! if anything it will help by reducing your egts a little, and may even help lower the drive pressure on the turbo. i have the banks muffler on my truck and it is pretty loud as it is, but it will be strait piped as soon as possible!

The SWOOSH sound your talking about between shifts is the sound of the turbo losing boost between shifts. Perfectly normal.



Now turbo bark, which is a kinda of HUFF sound that happens when your way up in there on boost and you all of a sudden have to let completely off or most of the way off the throttle when your running peak boost can be harmful.



However I believe you just talking about the cool sound of changing gears that only comes out of a straight pipe! Oo.

Yes, I am hearing that awesome scream between shifts, but as I said in the original post I was experimenting with it last night a bit and it made the same scream, as if I was shifting, when I was way up in boost and backed off the throttle suddenly. Is this because I am running no backpressure to the turbo, due to no muffler, and it would be the same as shifting?? I never heard any "HUFFS" as you put it, just the loud "SWOOSH" or scream.

Silencer Ring?

Experiment a little by removing your Silencer Ring and then replacing it.



I'm guessing you'll like the sound and "feel" better with the ring removed.

The silencer ring is not going to affect performance period. I have talked to many diesel engineers about this and they all agree. It only distorts the airflow into the turbo and actually causes turbulant air rather than a nice smooth controlled air flow. Therefore, in theory, causing a reduction in HP and torque, but then again there are plenty of tests that prove that the silencer ring removed is no different that with it in, except for a much louder scream. I think I'll pass on removing the ring, BTW have you experimented with what you are telling me to do?? What "feel" are you feeling with yours removed??

it's just the sound of the turbine and compressor wheels slowing down with the gasses contacting them... wait till you remove the silencer, you'll be hearing all kindsa cool noises! LOL!



PS, you're making me go through straight-pipe withdrawls! I put a resonator on last week... 500+ miles a week with 5" straight pipe was just wearing on me... hell, you're making me want to put the stacks back on! LOL!

I'm not going to remove the silencer ring, it does nothing for perofrmance and IMO it acutally hurts performance, but that's just MO and my turbo already makes a loud enough scream.



Now, back to my original questions of turbo life and surging. Does anyone know of turbo life being reduced due to a straight pipe exhaust? Is surging decreased when straight piped due to no backpressure to the turbo??

well, I've noticed no performance difference with/without the silencer, I just love that big truck sound of the turbo screaming away!

How long does this take. Is it one of those things you can just pop apart and put the ring back in. i've seen plenty of pics and sorta determined from others that it would get too anoying on a daily basis, but I think now I just gotta give it a try. Can anyone give a 5 minute step-by-step?

you just pop the air cleaner hose off the turbo, and use a small screwdriver or two to remove a snapring, and the silencer ring... takes about 30 sec

does anyone have any pictures on how to remove the silencer ring on a 12v? i just recently put a 4" turbo back exhaust on my 96 and i can hear the turbo spool up 10000 times better. i dont know if anyone has the same problem as me, the truck aint loud enough. about to put the muffler in the garage with the kitty kat.

cboerm, if you pup off your intake hose and look at it, you would realise how easy it really is. you just take out the snap ring and the silencer (like a large washer) and put the hose back on, its probably the easiest thing you could do to your truck

Please note that the word "feel" is in in "quotes" - denoting that it was not a true or actual "feel" IE no emperical engineering improvement - as you mentioned, and I'm fully aware of and agree.



Change in sound - YES. We're all ok with that - I hope.



Change in "feel" - Not statistically, true. BUT when you have blow-back suddenly spinning your turbo in reverse when you let off WOT suddenly AND removing the silencer ring AIDS in reducing the drastic jolt the turbine goes through, then "feel" IMO works very well.



My turbine "feels" better, my throttle foot "feels" better, I "feel" better by reducing the harshness of the blow-back significantly from what was there with the silencer ring in.



I got sick of feeling (actual feel) the Whoosh and knowing how what my turbo was going through each time it happened. Short-term - no problem. Long-term - problems. Removing the ring hasn't eliminated the Whoosh, but it significantly reduced it... and my turbo is MUCH better for the wear because of it.



Plus, I like the sound/tone of the turbo better. It "seems" like you can hear every single minute action of the turbo better.



No performance improvement in HP. BIG performance improvement in wear and tear on your turbo shaft.



I was only suggesting that you experiment with the sounds you were hearing.
