2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Straight pipe or not

How much more cab noise will a straight pipe cause or should i just go ahead and buy an exhaust system and if so which sounds the best.

The straight pipe sounds good and unless your in to quiet cars you will like it. Its a little bit louder but sounds a lot like a big rig. My local muffler shop did mine for $50. A larger exhaust system does very little for performance till around 500hp but does sound good.

I did not like the cab (and every other) noise from a straight pipe.

Next I tried a 4" resonator with 4" tailpipe and that was not much better than a straight.

I finally installed the full 4" turbo down piping with an Allied 4" straight through muffler. Much better, but got the dreaded drone. I have a second Allied muffler in the garage to install (when I find the time) and hopefullly kill the drone.

I have some weird exhaust system that sounds like a big rig, but it has no drone and it is larger then stock, maybe 3 3/4"? I like it, sounds really really good. Maybe I'll see if I can't climb under the truck tomorrow and take some pics and see if anyone can identifiy the various parts. It's probably 20% quiter than the straight-piped dodge CTD's around here.

When I put on my 4 inch system from Rip Rook, he offered me the 40 inch Donaldson muffler with it. That in combination with a SS Resinator tip sets an nice throaty sound that is plesant with no drone.

It sounds awsome. I had my truck straight piped. I have a Chrome 7" to 5" Slash Cut top stack as an exhaust tip. With the straight pipe, the 7" tip acted like an echo chamber. When I accelerated there was a very loud and noticable BBBBRRRAAAPPP!!! So noticable in fact I was ticketed twice by the same highway patrol cop for my "Modified Exhaust". I put my Magnaflow muffler back on. I miss the straight pipe. It just sounded so wicked. I say go for it. You can always add a muffler if you think it's too loud, or if Johnny Law nabs you. -Glen

I just installed a straight pipe 2 days ago. The cat ran awat months ago. The added noise in the cab is very easy to deal with. Outside is a different story. It tends to make people mad when you pass them at full throttle. I'll run it this way till I get ticketed.

I got the same BRAAAAAAAP! with a straight 5".



I bought the wrong big truck muffler and had to GUT it. Now, no brap, no drone, just SWEET 5" sounds. System by Big Exhaust.



DRONE-if you get it, try clamping long pieces of angle iron to the system. This can/should move the RPM of the resonance. Move/add/delete clamped on metal to get the resonance to change. You should be able to get it out of your normal operating RPM's.

Go Straight

I had the stock system, less the muffler and resonator, on mine and loved it. I installed a 4" SST system with a 5" tip as a test for work and it's too quiet. I am in the process of trying to get a straight piece of 4" SST pipe to replace the muffler with.

Oo. I misplaced my muffler and resonator this morning. Before I did it I was very skeptical because I plan on my dad purchasing the truck in the near future. First I drove my truck not really that noticable with the windows up. Went by the local Ford garage, little louder. Got back to my garage, dad takes off with me standing in the middle of the street and I couldn't get the lid off the jar of Vaseline quick enough:--) . Go for it.

Reminds me of the first time I ever heard a Dodge/Cummins with a straight pipe.



I knew that the Cummins was a good thing when they started putting them in the Doggies. I thought that I might get one someday. Then came 1994 and the 2G--things were getting good, I was much more interested in the CTD trucks. Then I heard a 5-speed, straight-piped rig. I'll never forget it. It was behind me and I turned around expecting to see a dump truck--when I saw the Dodge I knew that I HAD TO HAVE ONE!



A few more years passed before I got one, but now look at me.

The straight pipe has a hard-edged sound to it that I don't particularly care for (to each his/her own). The Jardine 4" system with Magnaflow straight-thru muffler has a deeper sound that knocks the hard-edged "brrratt" off the straight-pipe system, but I have the 2100-2400 RPM drone.

I put in a Rip Rooks straight thru 4". At first it had no drone,, then when I went back and retightened clamps, it had a drone..... at 80 mph No prob. It is loud outside, but going down the highway in cruise I don't even notice it. The biggest test was the wife and she says its fine with her.

Man, I can't tell you much I love my straight pipe. When I tell people that the truck is straight thru, everybody asks "Is it really loud and wait until you get pulled over". I think everyone should run straight pipe or some kind of exhaust system to combat the ever growing problem of "duck fart" from ricers. Combat "duck frat" run straight pipe.

Just do it. Straight pipe it. I love mine. I wonder whay I was so stupid and didn't do it the first day I had it. Love it. It sounds cool. Especially when you're romping on it while driving by some unsuspecting old farts (sorry) standing around at the local pharmacy. Makes their pacemakers skip a beat!!:--)

I lost the muffler and kept the resonator...

and have been very happy with the sound. Not too loud, but you know it is a Cummins. I will tell you, if you tow heavy a lot, the noise may be a little much even with the resonator still there. Removing the muffler and leaving the resonator will help with EGTs too.



If you want it really loud most of the time, remove the muffler and resonator! Very loud!



Just depends what you want. At the least, I would ditch the factory muffler to help reduced EGTs.
